Understanding fast magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) phenomena such as edge-localized modes (ELMs), sawtooth crashes, and magnetic reconnection events is essential for improving confinement and achieving stable operation in magnetically confined fusion plasmas. These events occur on sub-millisecond timescales and involve rapid changes in plasma parameters such as ion temperature and rotation, which necessitates advanced diagnostic systems capable of capturing such transient behaviors with high temporal and spectral fidelity. However, most conventional charge exchange spectroscopy (CES) systems are limited by a temporal resolution of 1–10 ms and fast CES systems are degraded spectral resolution under short exposure conditions. These limitations hinder the ability to resolve short-lived ion-scale dynamics that are critical for interpreting transport and stability in next-generation devices, including ITER.
To address this gap, an ultrafast charge exchange spectroscopy (UFCES) system was developed and deployed on the KSTAR tokamak. The UFCES system is designed to achieve a temporal resolution of 1 μs, marking a significant improvement over existing CES diagnostics. In the early development phase, two major technical challenges were identified and addressed: (1) insufficient photon intensity due to short exposure times, and (2) low spectral resolution from the limited light collection and hardware constraints. To resolve these, the diagnostic system was equipped with collection optic designed for high light throughput, and a grating–detector assembly coupled to a preamplified photomultiplier system that enhanced sensitivity. In addition, optical component selection, low f-number lenses, and high-efficiency gratings were optimized to maximize photon collection while preserving spectral resolution.
The performance of the system was evaluated through a combination of synthetic spectrum simulations and empirical tests, with the simulation of spectra (SOS) code playing a central role. Simulated spectra were used to determine the operational regimes—calculated by design specification of spectrometer, plasma parameters, and neutral beam parameters—in which the UFCES system could maintain a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) exceeding 10. This threshold was set to ensure reliability even under low-carbon impurity scenarios, such as those expected in ITER. Performance maps confirmed that the system remains functional even under unfavorable conditions, validating its applicability for reactor-grade plasmas.
Following hardware manufacture, a comprehensive commissioning phase was conducted, which included installation, fundamental experiment, calibrations, data processing, and initial measurements under the KSTAR plasma discharges. Data of initial measurements showed good agreement with the conventional CES. Temporal evolution of ion characteristics like rotation velocity and temperature was tracked successfully on microsecond timescales. These results demonstrate that the UFCES system achieved its design performance targets, confirming its readiness for detailed physical analysis.
Leveraging the fully commissioned system, experimental observations of transient ion dynamics during ELM crashes are presented. The UFCES system observed burst-like events characterized by rapid increases in ion temperature and decreases in toroidal rotation velocity within a few hundred microseconds. These ion burst events were observed exclusively during Type I ELMs and the temporal coincidence of the bursts with magnetic fluctuations suggests a strong link to MHD activity. In particular, the correlation with increase rate of ion temperature and magnetic probe signals supports the interpretation that the ion bursts are driven by localized magnetic reconnection near the edge region. These findings highlight the capability of UFCES to resolve fine-scale ion dynamics and provide experimental evidence for reconnection-mediated energy transport during ELM crashes.
In summary, the UFCES system demonstrated its capability to measure ion dynamics on unprecedented timescales, enabling the successful observation of sub-ms ion bursts associated with fast transient MHD events. These results not only validate the diagnostic design but also offer new insight into ion-scale transport processes during ELM crashes. The UFCES system thus establishes a powerful diagnostic platform for next-generation fusion experiments.
