This dissertation investigates the multifaceted degradation mechanisms responsible for capacity loss in Ni-rich layered cathode materials, focusing on LiNi₀.₈₅Co₀.₁₂Al₀.₀₃O₂ (NCA) under various operating conditions. A combination of synchrotron-based characterization and electrochemical analysis reveals how structural, morphological, and kinetic factors interplay to determine long-term performance.
In Chapter 2, capacity fading in full-cell systems is shown to differ between the ends of charge and discharge. At the charge-end, microcrack-induced side reactions under high-temperature cycling (45 °C) lead to irreversible structural changes and surface degradation, contributing to charge fading. In contrast, discharge fading stems from lithium inventory loss at the anode—particularly through SEI growth—and is partially reversible via a refresh process. These findings clarify the distinct origins of capacity loss during charging versus discharging.
Chapter 3 explores how cathode morphology and charge voltage influence capacity behavior. Single-crystal NCA (S-NCA) suppresses crack formation and exhibits stable long-term performance, particularly below 4.2 V. However, due to its large particle size, it suffers from reaction inhomogeneity and limited capacity above 4.3 V where phase transitions (H2-H3) are triggered. In comparison, polycrystalline NCA (P-NCA) demonstrates greater capacity above 4.3 V due to electrolyte penetration through microcracks, despite its inferior structural robustness. The results highlight how particle size, surface properties, and structural uniformity critically impact voltage-dependent capacity retention.
Chapter 4 examines the performance of blended cathodes composed of P-NCA and S-NCA under high-rate (2C) conditions. Contrary to expectations of synergy, the blended cathode (B-NCA) exhibits performance degradation due to mismatched kinetic and structural responses between the two phases.
    xiv
The S-NCA component is oxidized prematurely and contributes to increased resistance, while the P-NCA component bears excessive electrochemical burden, leading to cracking. This dissonance suggests that material blending without engineered compatibility can result in unexpected performance penalties, especially under fast-charging conditions.
Overall, this work elucidates that capacity loss in Ni-rich cathodes arises from a delicate balance of structural degradation, lithium transport limitations, and interfacial reactivity—all of which evolve differently depending on voltage and cycling rate. Effective cathode design must consider not only material stability and conductivity but also morphological homogeneity and operating conditions. These insights provide a pathway toward developing high-performance, durable NCA-based cathodes for next-generation lithium-ion batteries.
