With the growing demand for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries, the development of thick-film electrodes and the implementation of solvent-free, environmentally benign, and cost-effective dry electrode fabrication methods have emerged as critical challenges. Although silicon-based anode materials are actively being explored to improve both energy density and fast-charging capabilities due to their high theoretical capacity, their practical deployment is hindered by significant volume expansion during cycling, leading to mechanical instability and performance degradation.
As an alternative strategy, the optimization of dry-processed graphite anodes offers a promising route to simultaneously achieve electrode thickening and maintain favorable ionic transport characteristics. In particular, effective utilization of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) as a binder in dry electrodes necessitates a fundamental understanding and precise control over its fibrillation behavior. Uniform fibrillation of PTFE plays a pivotal role in mitigating electrode expansion, suppressing side reactions, and securing both mechanical robustness and electrochemical performance.
This study underscores the critical influence of PTFE molecular weight and crystallinity on binder network formation and presents a design framework for the fabrication of structurally stable and electrochemically durable dry-processed graphite anodes. By employing high-molecular-weight PTFE at a low content of 0.5 wt%, sufficient pore structures were preserved, thereby facilitating efficient lithium-ion transport within the electrode and enabling compatibility with fast-charging protocols.
Unlike conventional wet-processed electrodes, which frequently exhibit inhomogeneous lithiation profiles under high-rate conditions, the dry-processed electrodes maintained uniform lithiation depth even after charging under 3C CC-CV modes, indicating superior ionic accessibility and kinetic stability. Moreover, the process demonstrated scalability by successfully fabricating electrodes with high areal capacities, confirming the strong potential of dry electrode technology for next-generation high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries.
