The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of scientific activities using marine environment picture books on young children’s scientific process skills and environmental sensitivity. For this purpose, 22 five-year-old children enrolled in two classes at M Kindergarten located in Busan were divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group participated in scientific activities developed by the researcher using marine environment picture books, while the control group did not receive any specific intervention. The scientific activities using marine environment picture books were composed based on three content areas: “What is the ocean?”, “The impact of the ocean on humans,” and “The impact of humans on the ocean.” Each category included three activities, totaling nine sessions. Each session was designed to incorporate one or more subcomponents of scientific process skills and environmental sensitivity, and each lasted approximately 40 minutes. Before and after the intervention, the "Scientific Process Skills Test" developed by Jo Boo-wol (2004) based on Martin’s (1997) process skills scale, and the "Environmental Sensitivity Test," adapted for children by Kim Eun-jung and Cho Boo-kyung (2013) from the tool developed by Kang Young-sik and Kim Yong-sook (2012), were administered. The collected data were analyzed using independent samples t-tests through the IBM SPSS Statistics 30.0 program to verify the differences between the groups. As a result of the study, the children in the experimental group showed significant improvement in both scientific process skills and environmental sensitivity compared to those in the control group. Significant differences were also found in each subcomponent of the two domains. These results suggest that integrating marine environmental education and science activities using picture books—a medium familiar to children—enhanced their interest, emotional engagement, and immersion in scientific topics. This study is meaningful in that it applied marine environmental education to young children and demonstrated that scientific activities using marine environment picture books serve as an effective educational medium in integrated learning. The results also suggest that this approach has strong potential as an integrated educational method capable of simultaneously fostering scientific process skills and environmental sensitivity, two seemingly different educational goals. For future research, it is recommended to include children from diverse regional and cultural backgrounds to enhance the generalizability of the findings. In addition, follow-up assessments and qualitative research should be conducted to explore children’s developmental processes in greater depth. Procedural improvements such as evaluator training, role separation between researchers and examiners, and the involvement of multiple raters are also necessary to strengthen the reliability and validity of the evaluation.
