As mental health issues surge in modern society, emotional instability, chronic stress, sleep disorders, and persistent fatigue have emerged as major factors significantly reducing quality of life. With growing concerns about side effects and dependency issues of conventional pharmacological treatments, interest in nature-friendly alternative therapies has increased.
In this study, a meta-analysis was conducted to provide objective information on how Ayurvedic-based essential oils (rose, damask rose, and lavender) affect factors that influence adult mental health (anxiety, stress, depression, sleep quality, and fatigue). For the meta-analysis, relevant studies published between 2013 and 2024 were searched using domestic and international academic databases.
From a total of 52,823 studies identified, 58 were selected for analysis after applying strict inclusion criteria. Before the analysis of effect sizes, funnel plots confirmed the absence of publication bias, and forest plots verified heterogeneity, thus ensuring the reliability of results derived from the 58 studies.
Analysis of the overall effect size of rose essential oil on factors affecting adult mental health was 0.501, indicating a medium level of effectiveness. By dependent variable, it showed medium effect sizes for anxiety (0.499) and stress (0.507), but had no significant effect on depression (0.053). Meanwhile, damask rose essential oil showed effect sizes of 0.603, 0.565, and 0.470 in stress, anxiety, and depression, demonstrating overall higher effectiveness compared with rose essential oil.
Analysis of single lavender essential oil showed a large overall effect size of 0.706. By dependent variable, effect sizes were the highest for anxiety (0.731), followed by stress (0.730), sleep (0.673), and fatigue (0.601). Lavender-containing mixed essential oils showed an overall effect size of 0.938, larger than that of single lavender essential oil, which my indicate a synergistic effect between lavender and other essential oils. For mixed lavender essential oils, effect sizes were the highest for sleep (1.383), followed by fatigue (1.159), stress (0.789), and depression (0.638).
In summary, damask rose essential oil was effective for stress reduction, single lavender essential oil for anxiety and stress relief, and mixed lavender essential oils for improving sleep quality and reducing fatigue. Despite the limitations of this study, as it did not consider variables such as differences in essential oil quality and purity, it holds significant academic value for systematically verifying the effects of rose and lavender essential oils on factors that affect adult mental health. It also provides empirical evidence applicable in clinical and counseling settings.
The positive effects of aromatic essential oils on adult mental health identified through this research may be utilized in practice-centered professional fields such as counseling psychology, clinical psychology, nursing, and integrative medicine. This would contribute to the improvement of mental health in contemporary society.
