This study aims to examine the effects of project-based water environment education on elementary school students' eco-friendly attitudes and environmental literacy.
The research participants were 27 fourth-grade students (17 boys and 10 girls) from a class at B Elementary School, located in A Metropolitan City. The researcher conducted a 12-session water environment project-based class and administered pre- and post-tests on students’ eco-friendly attitudes and environmental literacy. Additionally, students’ reflective writings after the lessons were qualitatively analyzed to assess their responses.
The research procedure followed this sequence: literature review → project class design → pre-test → project class implementation → post-test and reflection analysis. The project-based lessons included real-world problem-solving activities such as reading picture books, planning campaigns, investigating water footprints, creating posters, conducting campaigns, and presentations with peer evaluation.
The findings are as follows:
First, the project-based water environment education had a statistically significant positive impact on students' eco-friendly attitudes. The average score increased from 3.56 (pre-test) to 4.46 (post-test), with improvements observed across cognitive, affective, and behavioral domains. Notably, the behavioral domain showed the greatest improvement, indicating that students developed proactive environmental attitudes through hands-on experiences such as planning and implementing campaigns rather than simply receiving information.
Second, students' environmental literacy also significantly improved after the lessons. The overall average score rose from 3.47 to 4.19, with significant gains in cognitive elements like "ecological knowledge" and "knowledge of environmental issues," as well as behavioral components such as "environmental actions" and "environmental skills." While emotional sensitivity improved significantly, the sub-domain of "environmental attitudes and values" did not show marked change, suggesting that long-term approaches may be necessary to influence value systems.
Third, analysis of the students’ reflections showed generally positive responses to the project-based class. Many students expressed a strong awareness of the seriousness of water-related environmental issues and made specific commitments such as saving water or reducing plastic use in daily life. Some students also reported discussing the importance of environmental protection with their family and friends, indicating that the learning extended beyond the individual and into the community.
These results confirm that project-based water environment education is an effective teaching and learning method for fostering environmental sensitivity, eco-friendly attitudes, and environmental literacy among elementary school students. In particular, the curriculum design, which emphasized learner autonomy and real-life application based on relevant topics, led to positive educational outcomes. This has significant implications for the direction of elementary environmental education aimed at building a sustainable future society.
