This study aims to visually embody the transcendence of the body manifested in shamanic rituals performed in the Siberia region through the medium of ceramic sculpture. The human body is commonly perceived as the most tangible and intimate material entity, with the mind closely bound to it. However, the researcher has repeatedly experienced a peculiar sense of the mind being detached from the body, and such transcendental experiences served as a primary impetus for this study. Shamanic rituals, as performed by shamans, are spiritual acts in which the material body and abstract mind interact structurally. In particular, the possession experience in initiation rituals is linked to supernatural phenomena such as the dismemberment and reassembly of the body and the traversal of boundaries between life and death. Furthermore, during rituals, shamans demonstrate transcendental phenomena by separating their soul from the body or accepting other spirits through intense immersion. This research visually reinterprets the spiritual transformation and transcendental process of the body experienced by Siberian shamans during rituals and emphasizes the maximization of transcendence through the replication, incision, and combination of abstract forms of body parts. The theoretical investigation explores the characteristics of Siberian shamans and their possession experiences, examining the relationship between shamans and the body, as well as the ritual methods and their interpretations. It also analyzes the symbolic and formative features of ritual tools significant in these rituals and considers examples of artworks by contemporary artists who have incorporated shamanic rituals into their practices. The artworks created for this study focused on expressing the spiritual transformations experienced by shamans during rituals through bodily forms using clay. The works consist of a three-part series based on ritual structures: Ecstasy, which visualizes a state of ecstasy achieved through dance and ritual tools; Trance, which captures the complete separation of the body and soul at the peak of ecstasy; and Possession, which embodies a state in which an external spirit possesses the shaman’s body. Given the scarcity of precedents attempting to represent shamanic rituals through ceramic sculpture, this study focuses on visualizing the transcendence and corporeality inherent in these rites. Its significance lies in giving concrete form to the symbolic relationship that transcends the boundary between body and spirit, grounding it in the inherent symbolism of clay as a material and its transformative process. The researcher hopes this study can serve as a proposition for expanding the thematic and material scope within the realm of contemporary sculpture.
