This thesis examines the persistent social othering of North Korean defectors in South Korea, despite their formal inclusion as citizens and shared ethnic identity with South Koreans. It addresses the central research question: Why do North Korean defectors in South Korea continue to experience social othering and limited intergroup contact despite a shared national identity and the existence of formal integration programs? Drawing on Intergroup Contact Theory and Third Place Theory, the study investigates whether informal community settings can serve as effective third places that foster integration, mutual recognition, and social capital between defectors and South Korean citizens. The research adopts a qualitative methodology supported by secondary data. Thematic analysis is applied to data from academic literature, government reports, NGO publications, and national surveys, examining the relationship between intergroup contact and social integration outcomes. The study defines contact as the degree and quality of interaction between groups in informal spaces, and integration as feelings of belonging, trust, and satisfaction in the host society. Findings suggest that third places play a crucial role in reducing prejudice, promoting trust, and challenging dominant narratives of otherness. Churches offer spiritual and emotional support, sports clubs promote teamwork and nonverbal bonding, and libraries (although less developed in the South Korean context) hold untapped potential for inclusive engagement. However, the success of these spaces depends on intentional design, cultural sensitivity, and institutional support. In conclusion, this thesis argues that third places can serve as powerful, low-pressure environments for building social bridges. They offer a vital complement to state-led resettlement programs and should be more systematically included in integration strategies for North Korean defectors. Keywords: North Koreans. Defectors. South Korea. Social integration. Third Places.
