Research on ancient copper production in the Korean Peninsula has largely relied on metallurgical analyses due to the scarcity of tangible evidence and early historical records. There has also been a tendency to uncritically adopt Japanese research frameworks regarding copper smelting processes. Against this backdrop, the recently excavated Jin’an Daeryang-ri copper production site represents a groundbreaking discovery, offering the first archaeological evidence in Korea to substantiate copper mining and smelting practices. This marks a significant turning point in the study of ancient metallurgy in Korea.
This study aims to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the Jin’an Daeryang-ri copper production site from archaeological, metallurgical, and historical perspectives. The primary objective is to reinterpret the types of copper ore and smelting techniques used, while positioning this site within the broader context of East Asian metallurgical history. To achieve this, in-depth examinations of prior research in China and Japan were conducted, alongside a detailed review of the excavation report for the Jin’an Daeryang-ri site. This comparative analysis seeks to elucidate the characteristics and significance of the site.
The findings revealed that prior domestic studies on copper smelting were heavily based on the uncritical adoption of Japanese theoretical frameworks, particularly from modern Japanese sources and hypotheses proposed in the early 2000s. However, these frameworks are not universally accepted even in Japan, underscoring the need for their reassessment.
An analysis of China’s Tonglüshan site and Japan’s Nagatobori site demonstrated that both featured smelting furnaces reconstructed with pit-kiln structures, using oxidized copper ore as their primary raw material. The study also highlighted variations in the documented smelting processes for sulfide copper ore: China employed repeated roasting and reduction processes, while Japan utilized oxidized smelting with clay furnaces.
A reexamination of the Jin’an Daeryang-ri site suggests that its smelting furnaces, similar to those at Tonglüshan and Nagatobori, were pit-style kilns. This evidence supports the hypothesis that oxidized copper ore, rather than sulfide copper ore, was predominantly used at the site. Particularly, the trace amounts of sulfur found in slag, previously interpreted as residues from the roasting process, can also be attributed to the inherent characteristics of oxidized copper ore. Furthermore, the majority of Cu/S ratios exceeding 1 and the presence of copper and malachite in the slag strongly indicate the use of oxidized copper ore.
A review of historical records reclassified the terminology used for copper. It was confirmed that "natural copper" (自然銅) mentioned in Joseon-era gazetteers refers not to pure copper but to pyrite. This finding challenges previous interpretations that linked "natural copper" to ancient mining sites, highlighting the necessity of reexamining earlier studies. Additionally, based on reports dating the Jin’an Daeryang-ri site to the late Unified Silla to early Goryeo period, it is inferred that oxidized copper ore was primarily used as a smelting raw material during the Goryeo period. Consequently, it is argued that “red copper” (赤銅), frequently noted in historical records as a major product of the Goryeo period, may have been a byproduct of oxidized copper smelting.
