국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구에서는 전쟁에 대한 인식과 이해를 높이기 위한 도구로서 영화의 가능성을 탐구합니다. 이 연구는 관련 연구 검토와 전쟁에 관한 신중하게 선정된 영화 목록 분석을 통해 수행됩니다. 전쟁이 민간인과 사회에 끼치는 파괴적인 영향에도 불구하고, 세계 곳곳에서 여전히 분쟁과 전쟁이 일어나고 있습니다. 수많은 연구들은 전쟁을 포함한 사회적 및 정치적 사건에 대한 대중의 인식을 형성하는 데 있어서 영화와 같은 시각적 콘텐츠의 힘을 입증했습니다. 이 논문은 영화가 그 광범위한 접근성과 영화에서 사용되는 스토리텔링 기법 때문에 전쟁에 대한 인식과 이해를 높이는 데 독특한 잠재력을 가지고 있다고 주장합니다. 본 논문은 모방적 및 시적인 시각화 스타일, 그 장점 및 다양한 시각 스타일 사용으로 인해 발생할 수 있는 잠재적인 윤리적 문제를 논의합니다.
적절한 시각 스타일을 선택함으로써, 영화는 전쟁에 대한 고정관념과 가정을 도전하고, 공감을 유도하며, 전쟁의 원인과 결과에 대한 인식을 높일 수 있습니다. 이는 영화가 평화를 촉진하고 전쟁이 민간인과 사회에 미치는 영향을 줄이는 데 강력한 도구가 될 수 있다는 것을 의미합니다.
연구의 최종 단계는 전쟁의 대한 단편 영화를 만드는 것입니다. 이 단편 영화는 연구 전반에서 조사된 통찰력과 개념을 보여주고 전쟁 시각화의 가능성을 더욱 탐구하기 위해 제작되었습니다. 이 프로젝트를 통해, 이 연구는 시각적 스토리텔링이 전쟁에 대한 대중의 인식에 어떤 영향을 미치고, 고정관념에 도전하며, 관객들 사이에 공감을 조성할 수 있는지 보여주려고 합니다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This thesis studies the potential of film as a means for raising awareness about war and the ethical issues regarding understanding of war through film. The thesis research is conducted through reviewing related studies, analyzing 6 films about war, and producing a short film about war. The impact of wars on civilians and society was and still is catastrophic but the conflicts continue to happen around the world. Existing studies have demonstrated the power of film and other visual art in shaping public perception of social and political events. This research argues that film has a strong potential for increasing awareness and understanding of wars because of the visual storytelling techniques and its wide availability. The paper analyzes this potential based on two types of visualization styles, mimetic and poetic, their difference, their strengths, and their ethical weaknesses. This analysis highlights the significant impact of the visual style on how people perceive and understand wars. By selecting the appropriate visual style, films can challenge war stereotypes and assumptions. Films can encourage empathy and raise awareness of the causes and aftermath of wars, which means they can be a powerful tool in promoting peace and reducing the impact of wars on civilians and society. The final and most crucial stage of this thesis research is the creation of a short film titled “The Missiles and The Coffee”. This short film was produced to illustrate the insights and concepts examined throughout the thesis and to further explore the possibilities of war visualization. Through this practical project, this thesis seeks to demonstrate how visual storytelling can be used to represent war, challenge fixed stereotypes, and foster empathy among audiences.
