Income inequality in South Korea : Survey data comparison

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 가계금융복지조사와 한국노동패널조사 설문자료를 통해 한국의 소득불평등을 탐구한다. 사용된 자료에 따라 소득불평등의 수준이 상이한데, 이러한 불일치는 각 조사에서의 소득 보고 양상의 차이에서 일부 기인한다. 가계금융복지조사에서는 상위 1% 소득자의 자산소득 비율이 한국노동패널조사의 상위 1% 소득자보다 더 크게 포착되는 반면, 하위소득자의 자산소득 비율은 더 작게 포착되는 경향이 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 가상의 소득분포를 생성하고, 가계금융복지조사와 한국노동패널조사에서의 소득불평등 수준의 중간 값으로 나타나는 대안적 지표를 제안하여 균형 잡힌 분석을 제공한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study explores income inequality in South Korea through two household surveys: the Survey of Household Finance and Living Condition (SFLC) and the Korea Labor Income Panel Study (KLIPS). I show different levels of income inequality depending on the data used. This discrepancy stems from the different income reporting behaviors in each survey. Compared to KLIPS, the top income earners in SFLC report larger proportion of asset income, while lower-income individuals report smaller proportion of asset income. I also offer an alternative measure of income inequality by creating a counterfactual income distribution. This returns the income inequality index values between those from two original datasets.
