In this study, we attempted to determine whether a nutrition education program developed by the Korea Health Promotion and Development Institute (KHPDI) could improve blood sugar control by improving dietary and nutritional issues when applied to type 2 diabetes patients referred from primary health care.
In the pilot project for chronic disease management in primary care in Yangsan, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, South Korea, patients visiting local clinics participating in the program were assessed by physicians. Among those patients newly diagnosed with diabetes based on physician assessment, 17 were identified as needing lifestyle management. These patients were then referred to the public health center and received an 8-week dietary management program conducted by a nutritionist at the center. Throughout the program, participants attended basic, advanced, and practical education sessions at the health center in weeks 3, 5, and 7, respectively. Additionally, in weeks 2, 4, 6, and 8, they received personalized management and individual counseling via social networking services (SNS). In the 9th week, face-to-face post-assessments were conducted, while satisfaction evaluations were conducted Online.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the 'Nutrition Education Program' developed by the Korea Health Promotion and Development Institute and was conducted after the end of the nutrition education program.
The main indicators of the study were the change in glycated hemoglobin levels and the increase in the total scores of nutrition knowledge, eating behavior, and self-efficacy. After the education, there was no significant change in the patients' fasting plasma glucose, a key indicator
of diabetes. it showed a slight decrease from 123 mg/dL pre-intervention to 119 mg/dL post-education. hemoglobin A1c, which evaluates the average blood glucose levels over the 2-3 months and assesses blood glucose control, improved significantly from 6.53% to 6.38% (p=0.029). The total score of nutrition knowledge significantly increased from 80.6 pre-education to 95.9 post-education (p=0.001). Similarly, the total score of dietary behavior increased from 31.7 to 34.2, showing a significant change (p=0.001). Moreover, the total score of self-efficacy increased from 29.7 to 32.8, indicating a significant change (p=0.002).
After the nutrition education program, a non-face-to-face survey of satisfaction with the nutrition education program showed that 12 patients chose "very much" in the "comprehensively satisfied with the program", 3 patients chose " Somewhat Agree", and 1 patient chose "normal" and "generally not", indicating that most patients were highly satisfied with the nutrition education program.
In conclusion, it was confirmed that the nutrition education program developed by the Korea Health Promotion Institute had a positive impact on patients with type 2 diabetes linked to primary care, as it improved nutritional knowledge, dietary behaviors, self-efficacy, and blood glucose control. It is anticipated that this program can be applied to various regions participating in the pilot project for chronic disease management in primary care, making it a more effective method for managing diabetes within the community.
