Historically, shamans have actively developed religion, rituals, and art based on community culture. Shamans are known to be typical people who have to choose a profession regardless of their own will. I wondered why shamans had to choose the profession of “shaman.” In this paper, I would like to present the characteristics by studying the correlation between shamans and shamans using fortune telling. The scope of the study is that this paper examines the theories of fortune telling necessary for shamans' fortune telling, such as geokguk, yukchin, ohaeng, shinkang·shinyak, hwagaesal, and daily life, based on fortune telling literature such as 『Samyeongtonghoe』, 『Myeongriyak-eon』, 『Yeonhaejapyeong』, 『Sajuchumyunghak』, and 『Japyeongjinjeon』, as well as related literature on shamanism such as 『Seolmunhaeja』, 『Seokmyeong』, and 『Sagi』. In addition, the fortune telling theories of 110 shamans selected as a sample through a questionnaire are collected, and the application of these theories to fortune telling and the characteristics of fortune telling are examined. The method of the study is to deeply examine the correlation between the detailed items of the subject of fortune-telling and shamans in the literature of fortune-telling, quantify the subject of fortune-telling into numbers, set the application criteria, and apply it to the Sajoo of the selected sample of shamans to derive the characteristics. The empirical study was to create a questionnaire and distribute it randomly to 200 shamans and collect 130 sheets. Among them, 110 people who responded appropriately to the questionnaire were selected as a sample. The detailed items of the subject of fortune-telling were applied to the Sajoo of the selected sample of shamans to concisely describe the subject of fortune-telling, and the research hypothesis was set to the subject of fortune-telling and life satisfaction. The purpose was to present meaningful characteristics of fortune-telling through empirical analysis and post-verification using the SPSS 13.0 statistical program. The results of this study concluded that the characteristics of shamanism are the in-su-geuk of the country, the extreme new medicine of Shin-gang and Shin-yak, and the daily Gye-o-haeng. The satisfaction with life was concluded as satisfactory through empirical analysis and post-verification analysis, and the results of the six relatives and the five elements were not found, so it was concluded that there was no difference in characteristics from the general public.
The implications of the study are that the in-su-geuk presented as characteristics is ‘a seal, a string, a straightening case’, meaning ‘to stamp accurately’, and the occupation group can be viewed as spiritual, philosophical, Taoist, and religious. The extreme new medicine of Shin-gang and Shin-yak becomes nothing if it is weak. If it is Shin-yak, even good fortune becomes bad.” The daily Gye-o-haeng said, “Gyu (癸) means ‘to count [揆]’, and it can count all things, so it is called Gye.” The occupation group can be viewed as mental, spiritual, and religious.
The significance of the study and future tasks are that the significant characteristics of the results of this study, which are concluded as the in-su-geuk of the geokguk, the extreme new medicine of the sin-gang and sin-yak, and the five elements of the daily life, are very closely related to the shaman.
As a future task, before writing a research paper on the shaman, it is necessary to establish a long-term relationship with the shaman associations of each region, to understand the characteristics of each region in detail, to receive a lot of advice from seniors who have expert knowledge on the shaman, and to proceed with the composition of the questionnaire.
