Cylindrical Pottery(圓筒形土器) was produced in the southwestern part of
the Korean Peninsula for a relatively short period of time from the 4th to 6th
centuries, and was used for ritual purposes in tombs and residences. As
cylindrical Pottery was excavated in the 1990s, research has been conducted
focusing on the relationship between Korea and Japan, and it has been argued
that it has been used in the Geumgang and Yeongsan rivers since the early
days due to the increase in excavation cases. Recognizing these problems,
cylindrical pottery excavated from the Korean Peninsula was analyzed.
A total of 34 relics were selected based on the recently confirmed remains,
and the appearance of cylindrical pottery was different and differences were
confirmed locally and categorically, so they were divided into "Jar type(壺形系)" and "cylindrical type(筒形系)" and subdivided according to their form.
The cylindrical pottery was divided and organized by river area, and it was
divided into a circumferential type and a partial type according to the
establishment landscape, along with the characteristics of the target relics, the
location of the discharge, and the relics, and detailed attributes were
reviewed.
As a result, the development pattern of cylindrical pottery was divided into
four stages. In the first stage, jar-type cylindrical pottery appears. It is
mainly found in ancient tombs in the form of formulations and square tombs,
mainly in the Geumgang and Yeongsan rivers, and a burial system that
destroys and contributes pottery to the ancient tombs is popular. After that,
in the second stage, the jar-type cylindrical pottery was surrounded around
the basin in a circular shape in the Yeongsan River area, and the size
increased to increase visibility. In the Han River area, a cylindrical pottery
with woodblock scratches(Hakeme: 刷毛目) was produced, and it appeared in
direct exchanges between the central Baekje and the Japanese archipelago. In
the third stage, cylindrical-type cylindrical pottery is developed into the
Yeongsan River area, and the shape of a bowl or jar is formed at the top,
and the characteristics of the re-ji system appear in the manufacturing
technique. In the fourth stage, as the demand for cylindrical pottery increases,
Haniwa埴輪, which is most similar to the Japanese archipelago, appears
through regularization and simplification.
It can be seen that the appearance of cylindrical pottery was first
recognized as jar-type cylindrical pottery was used in ancient tombs for the
purpose of destroying and contributing to the tomb from the 4th century, and
cylindrical-type cylindrical pottery was excavated from the center of
Hanseong Baekje in the 5th century. It is necessary to interpret the
emergence and development of cylindrical pottery between the central
Hanseong Baekje and the Mahan and Japanese islands.
