Due to global warming, global sea levels have been steadily rising, with the rate of increase accelerating recently. Coastal areas, consequently, are facing increased risks of permanent flooding, a situation exacerbated when physical processes like tides coincide with sea-level rise. The western sea of the Korean peninsula, characterized by its shallowness and significant tidal ranges, is particularly susceptible to these changes. This study aims to understand the effects of tides in this region. Specifically, it focuses on decomposing the water level data of the Han River estuary harmonically to calculate the amplitudes of astronomical and shallow water tides. This process facilitates a comparison of the range of tidal effects and an examination of the relationship between tide and turbidity in the Han River using high-resolution satellite optical RGB images. The study also analyzes the correlation between tidal currents, seabed topography, and satellite SAR image observations in the offshore area of the Han River estuary, Gyeonggi Bay. Harmonic analysis revealed that astronomical tide components' tidal cycles extend from the Han River estuary to Cheongdam Bridge, a finding corroborated by Wavelet Transform results. As one moves upstream, the dominant tide form shifts, with the proportion of the astronomical tide decreasing and the shallow water tide increasing. Sentinel-2A/B images, categorized according to tide, showed a yellow turbid boundary near Haengju Bridge during the ebb tide, moving upstream with increased flow. This boundary was absent during the flood tide. In Gyeonggi Bay, the σo size displayed in the channel varied with current direction and seabed topography, exhibiting a cosθ relationship between σo size changes and current direction. Additionally, offshore channel features altered or relocated depending on current strength, diminishing with weaker currents and reemerging with stronger ones. This study analyzed the impact of tides on Gyeonggi Bay and the Han River estuary area using satellite, tide, and water level data. The findings concerning tidal effects in the Han River estuary and the interplay between currents and seabed topography in Gyeonggi Bay are anticipated to provide a foundational basis for future research in areas vulnerable to rising sea levels.
