Reading is a the complex process of deriving meaning from written text, which is crucial for knowledge acquisition for school-aged children. The Simple View of Reading(SVR; Gough & Tunmer, 1986; Hoover & Gough, 1990) model suggest the necessity of both decoding and linguistic comprehension skills. Acquiring decoding alone may not ensure proficient reading comprehension. Focusing only on accuracy may cause difficulty to comprehend when reading due to limited cognitive capacity. Therefore, automatized reading, especially reading fluency is crucial. Reading fluency is the ability to read with accuracy and speed while comprehending meaning. It serves as a bridge between decoding and reading comprehension. Reading fluency is an important skill for Korean children. Hangeul is a transparent orthography language, so decoding development emerges at an early stage. Chall(1983) suggested that reading fluency develops around the age of 2nd to 3rd grader in elementary school. However, Korean children develop reading fluency even earlier because Hangeul has a transparent orthography system. Reading fluency is more likely to be acquired quickly in languages with a transparent orthography system, which explains better fluency than accuracy(De Luca, 2010; Kim et al., 2014). Moreover reading fluency is identified as a stable indicator for identifying dyslexia, regardless of language, environmental impact,
or age(Carioti et al., 2021). The SVR model has been widely validated in previous studies(Adlof, Catts, & Little, 2006; Kim & Wagner, 2015; Foorman, Herrera, Petscher, Mitchell, & Truckenmiller, 2015); however, a model considering child development and educational aspects is needed. In a study that consist subjects who use transparent orthography languages, the researchers demonstrated an extended SVR model, including reading fluency, and emphasized its importance(Fernandes et al., 2017; Florit et al., 2022). Writing is also important for reading comprehension. Reading and writing are components of written language. It has shown that when children engage in writing while reading, comprehension is enhanced(Abbott et al., 2010). Especially considering the high correlation between early decoding and spelling, it is important to examine both reading and writing(Kim et al., 2018). To examine the reading development of 1st and 2nd graders in elementary school, it would be necessary to explore the SVR model by incorporating reading fluency and writing variables. Previous research identified variables predicting reading comprehension skills rather than reading fluency. The factors of decoding, spelling, language, and phonological processing skills have been studied as prediction variables for reading fluency. However, most studies were cross-sectional resulting limited data of Korean children in lower grades with or without dyslexia (Kim et al., 2010; Kim et al., 2011; Seo & Kim, 2015; Seol, 2016; Park & Park, 2020; Kim & Yang, 2021; Ravid & Mashraki, 2007; Landerl & Wimmer, 2008; Kim, 2015; Kim et al., 2021; Giazitzidou & Padeliadu, 2022). Moreover, previous studies presented grade-level matched texts to dyslexic children, which led to difficulty in accurately analyzing their fluency abilities. Due to this reason, decodable texts should be presented for dyslexic children.
Children with developmental dyslexia struggle with both accurate and fluent reading. DSM-5 recommends diagnosing developmental dyslexia based on an assessment conducted after at least 6 months of appropriate intervention. However, previous research on Korean children with dyslexia were identified based on a one-time assessment. In this study, we observed 1st graders for a year and classified the reading groups during of their second year. We aimed to investigate the development of reading and writing during their first and second year with and without dyslexia through an extended SVR model. Additionally, we examined predictive variables, focusing on decoding, spelling, language, and phonological processing, for reading fluency skills during their second year. This study involved 144 participants, consisting of 62 children with dyslexia(DYS) and 82 typically developing(TD) children in Gangwon-do. The observations were conducted on 1st graders until their second year in five elementary schools. All participants were identified as having no difficulties in
nonverbal intelligence in their first year through K-CTONI-2(Park, 2014)(DYS: M=95.42, SD=9.33; TD: M=101.00, SD=10.19), and no language difficulties in linguistic comprehension results through KOLRA(Pae et al., 2015)(DYS: M=96.23, SD=8.49; TD: M=105.23, SD=8.70). The reading groups were classified in their second year based on the KOLRA(Pae et al., 2015) reading composite score 2(decoding + reading fluency + reading comprehension). Those scoring below 85(-1SD) were categorized into the dyslexic group, while those scoring above 90(+1 SD) were classified as the typical group. In this study, 10 tasks were used. The text reading fluency, spelling, and copying tasks were made by the researcher and validated. The morphology awareness task was adapted from previous studies(Jung, 2014; Jung, 2021). Reading comprehension, decoding, and phonological processing tasks were used from KOLRA(Pae et al., 2015). Using the M-Plus 8.9 program, we examined the relationships among reading and writing factors within each group at T1 and T2
by structural equation modeling (SEM). Research models 1 and 2 have reading fluency and spelling included in the extended SVR model, each with different paths. The alternative model was a [simple effects model], supposing that the four predictors independently contribute to reading comprehension. To identify which first year variables predict the second year’s reading fluency ability. Pearson correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were performed using SPSS 25.0. The results and discussion of this study are as follows. First, reading development were examined on dyslexic and typical children during their first and second year using the extended SVR model. The importance of reading fluency skills and the interconnectedness between reading and writing abilities were found. In typical children, reading fluency directly affected reading comprehension in their first year. The results of the mediation analysis confirmed that reading fluency serves as a mediating variable between decoding and reading comprehension. This confirms the central role of reading fluency in the reading development of typical children. By the second year, reading fluency and listening comprehension were variables that influenced reading comprehension. This indicates that typically developing children were using semantic knowledge to read through fluent reading from the second year. Additionally, decoding and spelling showed a strong correlation within the 1st graders, while in the second year, spelling directly influenced reading fluency.
Therefore, for typically developing children, reading and writing education should be integrated from the 1st grade of elementary school. Reading fluency did not have a significant effect on reading comprehension in the first year of dyslexic children, but by the second year, direct influence were shown on reading comprehension. It showed that dyslexic children had reading fluency development even through their decoding skills were not fully acquired. The relation between reading and writing showed high correlation in both first and second year, while listening comprehension did not have a significant effect at both points. Therefore, when intervening in the reading of dyslexic children, it is necessary to include reading fluency with decodable texts, and to connect writing activities during reading tasks for to be beneficial. Second, we identified the variables from the first year that predict the second year’s reading fluency. For the typically developing group, the predictive variables were Rapid Automatized Naming(RAN), word decoding, and phonological memory from their first year. In contrast, the dyslexic group showed that RAN was a significant predictor. In both groups, RAN was the most explanatory variable. Reading fluency and RAN have been identified as variables associated with the characteristic of 'automaticity', predicting children with reading difficulties(Puolakanaho et al., 2007; Lervåg & Hulme, 2009; Kirby et al.,
2010; Norton & Wolf, 2012). In this study, RAN is a significant predictive variable in both groups. Therefore, it is essential to assess RAN in early screening and identifying for dyslexic children in Korea. Decoding was a predictive variable in
the typically developing group. Decoding ability is one of the central variables in the SVR model(Gough & Tunmer, 1986; Hoover & Gough, 1990) and is an essential ability to read. Dyslexic children at the first year did not appear to be a factor
predicting fluency because they did not acquire the decoding ability. Therefore, it seems that RAN which reflects processing speed rather than decoding accuracy, has higher explanatory significance. Phonological memory(PM) was a predictive variable in typically developing children. PM is the ability to encode phonological information in working memory(Wagner & Torgesen, 1987). Previous studies suggest that in a transparent orthography system, children used phonological strategies during reading, indicating a correlation with PM and decoding(Kibby et al., 2014). In futher study, it will be crucial to closely examine how PM affects decoding and reading fluency. Phonological awareness(PA) is confirmed as a foundational variable for early reading, particularly in word reading skills(Chung, 2011; Won et al., 2020; Catts, 1993; Dally, 2006; Hogan et al., 2005; Landerl & Wimmer, 2008), though it was not a significant predictor in this study PA is an important variable in reading, but RAN is to show more significant in reading fluency of 2nd grade Korean elementary school children. Among the language variables, morphological awareness plays a crucial role in fluent reading, as it plays a useful role in approaching and learning new words(Jung, 2014; Kim & Choi, 2018; Han & Kim, 2018; Giazitzidou & Padeliadu, 2022). However, the reading fluency texts’ difficulty used in this study were controlled and not linguistic enough to require a vocabulary formation strategy, so morphological awareness was not a significant predictor of reading fluency. In future research, it will be essential to classify and examine subgroups within the developmental dyslexia group for reading and writing differences. Additionally, conducting various linguistic tasks such as vocabulary, morphology, and syntax will be crucial when investigating the impact of language variables on reading fluency.

(Kim et al., 2014; Kim et al., 2021).
