The risk of greenhouse gas emissions due to the expansion of the use of fossil fuels has been steadily mentioned since the end of the 20th century, and has recently emerged as a task that must be resolved due to the global abnormal climate and the intensification of the greenhouse effect. Accordingly, various methods for reducing the use of fossil fuels and promoting efficient energy use have been studied, and in particular, it has been attempted to replace internal combustion engines such as automobile engines and generators using fossil fuels with electric energy-based systems. Lithium ion batteries are currently the most extensive and commonly used batteries for storing electrical energy, and are used as energy storage systems in various fields due to the advantages of secondary batteries such as high efficiency and high energy density. However, in spite of the continuous development of technology, safety issues have been constantly raised in that it has a risk of explosion and fire due to external stimulation. In addition, as the price of raw materials also has risen sharply due to the explosive increase in demand for lithium ion batteries, another issue of economic dependence on lithium ion batteries, such as monopoly of raw materials in some countries, is also being raised. As an alternative to these lithium ion batteries, an aqueous energy storage system, one of the next-generation energy storage systems, is attracting attention. The electrolyte used in conventional lithium ion batteries is a flammable organic electrolyte, which poses a high risk of flammable fire. However, in aqueous energy storage systems, the risk of fire can be significantly reduced by using a water-based electrolyte.
In this study, an aqueous zinc ion energy storage system was researched as an alternative to a lithium ion battery. The zinc ion energy storage system has a large theoretical capacity (820 mAh g-1), the reserves of zinc used as an anode is abundant, and it has eco-friendly features. Moreover, it is safe in that it uses an aqueous electrolyte, and the cost of the device manufacturing process can be reduced in that the components of the energy storage system can be easily handled because they are stable in the atmospheric environment.
In addition, as a way to overcome the limitations of the packaging system, which is one of the most interesting topics in the energy storage industry, researches on flexible energy storage systems manufactured by imparting flexibility to materials constituting each part of the device are being actively attempted. In particular, interest in the use of human-centered electronic devices has recently exploded, and, following ESS and electric vehicle batteries, the flexible battery market is attracting attention as an energy storage system application field with the greatest market potential in North America. In line with the trend of these technologies, we implemented an aqueous zinc ion energy storage system as a flexible device.
In this research, a complex hybrid network between redox-based organic active material and CNT was designed to implement a flexible aqueous zinc ion energy storage system. A film-type electrode with flexibility was fabricated from the synthesized material and performance evaluation was performed to use it as an anode in an aqueous zinc ion energy storage system. To maximize the zinc ion storage capacity of the cathode active material, perylene tetracarboxylic anhydride (PTCDA), which has four carboxyl-based functional groups at the terminal, was used as a precursor for the organic electrode material. In addition, to improve the electrical conductivity and stability of 1-dimensional PTCDA, highly flexible Hy-PTPA@CNT film, a network complex of redox-based organic material and CNT, was synthesized by inducing hybridization and chemical bonding with CNT.
The Hy-PTPA@CNT electrode synthesized through this study demonstrated its potential as an electrode material for flexible aqueous zinc ion energy storage systems. Furthermore, as a result of combining the 1D nanotube-shaped Hy-PTPA structure with the CNT network through structural control of the PTCDA precursor, low electrical conductivity, which is a limitation of organic materials, could be improved. In addition, one of the advantages of organic materials, the ease of material introduction and design, was utilized to perform structuralization between carbon and organic materials. As a result, a flexible device was fabricated using the synthesized binder-free flexible electrode. And as a result of the electrochemical performance evaluation of the flexible device, stable high-capacity and long-term charge/discharge performance were demonstrated even under conditions bent at various angles from 0 to 180 degrees. Through this study, it is expected that source technology for the development of next-generation electrode materials and application to next-generation energy storage devices can be secured.
