Protein serine/threonine phosphatase (PSP) maintains appropriate serine and threonine levels in cells through PSK and antagonism. Such overexpression of PSPs participates in the signal action of cells and induces cell division, cell self-destruction, and metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes. It is known that the loss of STP, a type of PPP5, inhibits the differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes into mature adipocytes. Screening of 1,153 natural products revealed that Norcantharidin effectively inhibits PPP5. Furthermore, Western blot analysis of fat and diabetes-related markers after PPP5 knockdown showed that PPP5 inhibition has potential as a treatment for obesity and diabetes.
