This research presents a comprehensive evaluation of the application of Constructed Wetlands in Egypt, focusing on Ismailia and Bahar el, and Sydney, Australia as case studies for a comparative study. It highlights the remarkable benefits of CWs in addressing water scarcity, promoting sustainability, and supporting climate adaptation efforts in these locales.
Despite the existence of the river Nile in Egypt, it considered an arid country due to desert conditions and low amounts of rain fall. Currently, the country faces issues of water scarcity and the Egyptian government tries to find new ways to manage this crisis.
This research delves into the effective utilization of Constructed Wetlands as a crucial tool for water resource management and the promotion of circular economies in water usage. By analyzing three case studies in Ismailia and Bahar el in Egypt, alongside Sydney in Australia, this study examines how CWs can effectively address water scarcity, promote sustainability, and facilitate climate adaptation in communities. In the context of Ismailia and Bahar el, where water scarcity and resource management are pressing challenges, CWs can emerge as a sustainable wastewater treatment solution. The utilization of CWs has led to significant advancements in water reuse, groundwater recharge, and the reduction of environmental pollution. By analyzing the success and challenges of CW implementation in these regions, the study sheds light on the contextual influences that shape the effectiveness of CWs in addressing local environmental problems and how CWs facilitate a circular economy in water usage by transforming wastewater into a valuable resource for irrigation and conservation.
On the other hand, the case study of Sydney demonstrates a more advanced utilization of CWs, emphasizing their role in improving water quality and restoring ecosystems. The Australian example underscores the significant impact of CWs on urban ecosystems, biodiversity support, and community resilience against climate-related challenges. This case study showcases the adaptability of CWs as versatile systems offering ecosystem services and sustainable options for wastewater management in diverse socio-environmental settings.
The study highlights the flexibility of Constructed Wetlands as a key element of climate adaptation strategies in communities. In Egypt, where water scarcity is worsened by climate change, Constructed Wetlands can play a crucial role in reducing risks through their ability to withstand climatic changes, effective water treatment, and replenishment of groundwater. The use of CWs not only tackles local environmental problems but also strengthens communities' ability to cope with uncertainties related to climate change.
There are many constructed wet lands in Egypt, but it build in a random way , so there is a need to a system to organize these constructed wetlands to reaches to the maximum efficiency, thus this study attempted to assess the nature of the lands in Egypt to determine the suitable method that can be used in this area based on elevation, water table and suitable or sustainable types of wetlands to use in the different area. A map showing the areas in Egypt and the suitable method that can be used to achieve the maximum efficiency and sustainability in constructed wetlands was developed.
In conclusion, the research underscores the pivotal role of CWs in managing wastewater, promoting sustainability, and supporting climate adaptation efforts, offering valuable insights for the advancement of effective wastewater treatment solutions in densely populated areas worldwide.
