The purpose of this study is to analyze the places where Hyanggyo and Seowon were located during the Joseon Dynasty as indicators determined from a Feng Shui perspective to confirm location characteristics and environmental conditions. Therefore, the locations where five Hyanggyos and six Seowons in the Yeongnam region are located were analyzed and evaluated using 62 Feng Shui indicators determined from a Feng Shui perspective.
As a result, first of all, there were some items that did not match in Hyanggyo. However, in accordance with many items, a high conformity rate of 90.0% on average appeared. And there were some items that did not match even in Seowon. However, in accordance with many items, a high conformity rate of 89.0% on average appeared. Comparing the results of evaluating the places where Hyanggyo and Seowon are located, there are some differences in Cheong-ryong(靑龍) and Back-ho(白虎). most of the conformity rates were the same in Yong-maek(龍脈), Hyeon-mu(玄武), Joan-san(朝案山), Water(水), Jungsim-gonggan(中心空間), and Jwa-hyang(坐向).
According to these results, there was a time difference of nearly 200 years since the full-scale establishment of Hyanggyo and Seowon, and although the locational characteristics of Hyanggyo and Seowon were applied in conflicting ways, it appears that almost the same Feng Shui thinking was applied when determining the location. In addition, most of the Hyanggyo and Seowon are located in a sloped area with Baesan-imsu(背山臨水). Such a place is a good place for Feng Shui. Therefore, the place where Hyanggyo and Seowon are located can be said to be a good place for Feng Shui.
As a result, it is believed that Joseon's Confucian scholars actively accepted the Feng Shui thinking of Zhu Xi and used the common Feng Shui at the time to achieve harmony and balance and set a stable good place where Hyanggyo and Seowon were located.
As above, the Feng Shui requirements of the place where Hyanggyo and Seowon are located were checked. Through this, it was confirmed that Joseon's Confucian scholars clearly applied Feng Shui thinking when determining the location of Hyanggyo and Seowon. In the future, when analyzing the locations where other Hyanggyo and Seowon are located, more efficient analysis will be possible if the Feng Shui indicators presented in this paper are used.
