The family is the environment given to human beings from birth and plays an important role in their lives, and is the first social space that human beings experience. After the modern society, Due to the rapid industrialization, Changes in values, The social structure has changed due to the rapid industrialization, the change of values, and the rapid movement of population to large cities, This change brought about a change in the family form represented by the formation of the nuclear family. Among them, the attention to single-parent families is high due to the prominent social issues.
Korea and China are no exception, and family patterns have been changing rapidly since the 1990s as divorce rates have increased. With the increase of Single-parent families, Korea and China are facing similar problems. First, Single-parent families have limited family functioning due to the absence of one of the parents, Single-parent families face more difficulties than two-parent families and are more likely to be exposed to various problems. Second, Korean and Chinese societies with strong Confucian traditions still have a negative attitude toward single-parent families, Many people consider this type of family as a dysfunctional family. Third, Changes in family patterns have a huge impact on minor children who need parental nurturing and support, The negative impact on physical and mental health, in particular, is similar in both countries. According to the survey, due to these problems, children of single-parent families compared to children of two-parent families, Experience negative emotions such as anger, aggression, flight, difficulties in forming intimate relationships, feelings of inferiority, indifference, depression, restlessness, atrophy, impulsiveness, etc., which are difficult to regulate.
In this way, as single-parent families are formed and various problems occur or are predicted, Korea and China have been actively conducting research related to Single-parent families. Although Korea and China are similar cultural circles, there are differences in research subjects, research themes, research methods, and research contents. Therefore, it would be very important to develop single-parent family research in both countries by understanding the commonalities and differences of single-parent families and related research in both countries. The two countries, which share the same roots of Confucianism and have similar social and cultural backgrounds, have similarities in the issues related to children of single-parent families, but there are also differences in the issues related to children of single-parent families between Korea and China in various aspects such as institutions and legal systems. Therefore, it is necessary to compare and analyze the adjustment experiences of children from single-parent families in both countries, and to consider the process of transition from adoptive to single-parent families for children from single-parent families, and to comprehensively understand the various factors and coping styles that influence their adjustment process. In addition, through the comparative study of the adjustment experiences of children of single-parent families in both countries, it is necessary to identify the issues related to the study of multiple factors related to the grief, happiness, psychological difficulties, and adjustment of children of single-parent families in Korea and China, and to develop related research fields.
To achieve this purpose, this study first examined 140 academic journals related to single-parent families in Korea and China published in the past 20 years (2001-August 2021) to study 97 research papers in Korea and China, totaling 237 research papers. analyzed the current status of publication in academic journals, research themes, research types, characteristics of research subjects, research types, and other research trends in each year. Second, in order to comparatively analyze the research objects experienced by children of single-parent families in both countries during the adjustment process, 9 articles from Korea and 8 articles from China were selected for qualitative Meta-analysis and were analyzed comparatively to show new explanatory possibilities.
The research trends are first examined and summarized below.
First, the results of observing the annual research trends over the past 20 years show that single-parent family-related research in Korea and China has not necessarily increased or decreased, but has continued to change, with an increasing trend in Korea and a more or less stagnant tendency in China. In addition, in the case of Korea, the most active research was conducted during the period from 2016 to 2021, with 54 research articles, accounting for 38.6% of all studies. In China, the largest number of research works was conducted from 2006 to 2010, with 45 (46.4%).
Second, In terms of research method trends, both Korea and China are based on quantitative and qualitative studies. On the other hand, the most common statistical analysis methods for Quantitative research data in both countries are "Regression analysis", "T-test", "Correlation analysis", and "Analysis of variance". In terms of qualitative research, both countries use case studies and phenomenological research methods the most, while Korea uses "ethnographic study," "Q methodology," and "CQR analysis," while China does not involve such research methods.
Third, According to the analysis of research trends in academic journals, both countries have the most research in general education and developed areas. Secondly, in the field of social welfare, policy, and administration, there are 26 articles (18.18%) in Korea and 21 articles (22.34%) in China, which are more researched compared to other fields. In addition, due to the speed of development and cultural differences between the two countries, there is no research in the field of family and family support management and counseling in China, while there is not much in the field of medicine in Korea. In other words, in Korea, research on single-parent families is mainly in the field of "counseling" and "family science," while in China, research on single-parent families is especially in the field of "medicine and clinical science".
Fourth, in terms of research topics, Korea and China have paid much attention to research related to psychological and emotional health recovery, followed by more research related to communication and interpersonal relationships and self-growth than other topics, and relatively limited research in improving problem behaviors, adapting to school and school and parenting behaviors.
Fifth, in terms of the target population, there were 59 studies (34.71%) on elementary school students and 52 studies (30.59%) on adolescents in Korea, showing the second highest tendency. In China, the largest number of studies were conducted with adolescents, with 55 (51.40%),Elementary school students had 25 (23.36%), showing the second highest trend. In addition, there were 44 studies (25.88%) targeting single parents in Korea, more than 6 studies (5.61%) in China, while there were more studies targeting college students in China than in Korea.
The results of the qualitative Meta-analysis are summarized below.
The experiences of children from single-parent families in Korea and China are roughly divided into 3 processes: 1) facing changes in family structure, 2) difficulties arising from changes in family structure, and 3) rebirth of my life after overcoming difficulties. To summarize the theme and content of this adaptation experience, the theme of "Facing Changes in Family Structure" is that children of single-parent families experience changes in family structure in an involuntary manner. The theme of "difficulties arising from changes in family structure" is the difficulties that children face after changes in family structure with their adoptive parents, non-adoptive parents, new parents, friends, roommates, and various surrounding interpersonal relationships. The theme of "rebirth of my life after overcoming difficulties" is that the children overcame difficulties by making use of various support resources around them and their own way of thinking, and finally achieved the appearance of rebirth.
Based on these results, the adaptation process of children in single-parent families was described and comprehensive results were obtained. The implications were also explored, and insights and limitations were provided on the significance of the study, the multifaceted difficulties and adaptations of children in single-parent families, and suggestions were made for subsequent research.
