Living in a Bubble: A Grounded Theory Study of Arab Women Refugees in South Korea = 거품 속에서의 삶: 한국내 아랍 여성 난민에 관한 근거이론 연구

This study aims to explore the experiences of Arab Women refugees and their Barriers and Needs of Social Integration in South Korea.
The study was conducted using in-depth interviews with nine women refugees who fled from Syria, Yemen, Iraq, and Egypt because of civil war and internal conflicts and applied for refugee status in South Korea. The interviews were analyzed based on the grounded theory paradigm.
The researcher has found that Arab women refugees in South Korea live in a "Bubble," that inhibits them from fully engaging in South Korean culture and exposes them to various challenges. This study divided these barriers into two categories The Internal factors (1. The stereotypical Arabic mindset is "Fear from the Guard." 2. Having many children, as a cultural mindset of the More, the Merrier." 3. War Trauma).

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 한국 내 아랍 여성 난민의 경험과 그들의 사회 통합에 대한 장애 요소 및 필요성에 관한 탐구를 목적으로 한다. 본 연구는 국내 체류 중 난민 신청을 한 시리아, 예멘, 이라크, 이집트 출신의 여성 난민 9명을 대상으로 심층면접을 수행하였고, 이를 근거 이론에 의하여 분석하였다. 면접 대상자 전원은 내전 및 분쟁으로 인한 피난민이다.
국내 체류 중인 아랍 여성 난민은 '거품' 속에 살고 있어 한국 사회에서 적극적인 역할을 하지 못하고 다양한 장벽에 직면해 있다. 본 연구는 이 장벽을 내부 요인(1. 아랍인의 정형적 사고방식으로서 ‘보호자로부터의 공포’ 2. ‘많을수록 강해진다’는 다출산 문화, 3. 전쟁 트라우마)과 외부요인(1. 한국어, 2. 비자 유형 제한, 3. 이슬람 공포증)으로 구분했다.
