Happiness is one of the ultimate goals of human beings, and feelings of happiness can enhance an individual’s intellect, strength, and productivity. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicts that South Korea will rank the world’s 10th biggest economy, while the World Happiness Report (WHR) determines that South Korea has been ranked 61 out of 153 countries in 2021. Moreover, it should be noted that South Korean perceived their happiness lower than Chinese and Japanese, although the three countries belong to the same Northeast Asian cultural sphere.
Given the importance of happiness, the present study aims to find out the reasons for the relatively low perception of happiness in South Korea and develop specific measures to improve it. To achieve this aim, we set economic and social factors as the antecedents affecting happiness and observed whether happiness, economic factors, and social factors differ from country to country and whether economic and social factors affect happiness differently across countries. For the analyses, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and regression analysis were performed based on the World Values Survey data (Wave 4-Wave 7).
The results can be summarized as follows. First, South Korean perceived happiness lower than Chinese due to ‘financial satisfaction’ and ‘in-group trust’ over 2017-2020 (Wave 7). Second, South Korean perceived happiness lower than Japanese due to ‘financial satisfaction’ and ‘generalized trust’ over 1999-2004 (Wave 4); ‘financial satisfaction’ and ‘generalized trust’ over 2005-2009 (Wave 5); ‘financial satisfaction’ over 2010-2014 (Wave 6); ‘in-group trust’ over 2017-2020 (Wave 7). Based on these empirical results, the conclusion section includes the theoretical implications, practical implications, limitations of this study, and some suggestions for future research.
