상담심리학의 질적 연구를 위한 현상학적 근거이론의 개발과 적용 = Development and Application of Phenomenological Grounded Theory for Qualitative Research in Counseling Psychology

This study is conducted for the purpose of developing and applying phenomenological grounded theory as a new qualitative research methodology suitable for counseling psychology. In order to achieve this purpose, two major research questions are presented. First, according to what philosophical paradigms, procedures, and techniques is phenomenological grounded theory as an integrated qualitative methodology suitable for counseling psychology developed and how is this new methodology differentiated from existing phenomenology and grounded theory? Second, when applying the newly developed phenomenological grounded theory to qualitative research of inferiority feeling, what is the theoretical model that enable us to understand the structure and process of college students' inferiority experience, and what is the methodological differentiation of phenomenological grounded theory?
To answer the first research question, Research 1 goes through three procedures to develop phenomenological grounded theory. First, by reviewing the history of arguments surrounding the philosophical paradigm, procedures, and techniques of phenomenology and grounded theory, focusing on the main creators and successors of phenomenology and grounded theory, the methodological convergences of phenomenology and grounded theory are confirmed as follows. First, the development of theoretical sensitivity through the reflective use of researchers' prior understanding. Second, hermeneutic cycle in data collection, analysis. Third, combination between continuous comparison in coding and essential intuition in semantic analysis. Fourth, combination between derivation of critical category in selective coding for constructing theory as the goal of grounded theory and general structural description, comprehensive description, and typicality in phenomenology. Fifth, the pursuit of intersubjective validity in the evaluation of research results.
Second, 32 grounded theory-based qualitative studies and 53 phenomenology-based qualitative studies published in the two leading journals of Counseling Research and Counseling and Psychotherapy in Korea for five years from 2016 to 2020, respectively, are analyzed in ten aspects. Through this analysis, convergences are confirmed as follows. First, research themes. Second, research objectives. Second, hermeneutic cycle or a circular method of data collection and analysis rather than an inductive method adopted in most papers. Third, the approach of axis coding of grounded theory that shows the general structure and process of experiences or behaviors of all of participants, and then categorizes structure and process of each participant through process analysis converges with that of Giorgi's each participant's situational structural description and general structural description of all of participants expect except for order. Fourth, selection of participants. Fifth, credibility adopted as common criteria for validating research results
To answer the second research question, Research 2 conducts a qualitative study on the inferiority experience of college students by applying the philosophical paradigm, procedures, and techniques of the newly developed phenomenological grounded theory. To this end, five college students who are worried about inferiority are selected as research participants, and through situational structural descriptions and general structural description of all participants, the developmental origin of inferiority experiences, socio-psychological context, the essential aspects of the experience, and the future outlook for overcoming inferiority are revealed. Finally, phenomenological grounded theory-based qualitative research on inferiority experience reveals problems in actual use of existing grounded theory and phenomenology, and shows the way of overcoming these problems.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구1에서는 상담심리학의 질적 연구 방법론으로서 현상학적 근거이론의 개발을 목표로 한다. 첫째, 통합적 방법론 개발을 위한 이론적 근거규명 단계로서 현상학과 근거이론이 이론적으로 상호 친화성을 갖고 있다는 점을 밝히고자 한다. 질적 연구 방법론으로서 근거이론과 현상학은 19세기 말 이후 논리 실증주의 방법론에 대한 철학적 비판과 경험 과학적 반성의 산물로 등장했다는 점에서 연구절차나 기법뿐만 아니라 철학적 패러다임에서 두 방법론은 많은 수렴점을 갖고 있다. 더욱이 2000년대 이후 근거이론과 현상학은 최초의 개발자들뿐만 아니라 그 계승자들 사이에서 분화가 일어나고 서로간의 생산적인 논쟁이 있어왔는데 그 논쟁의 핵심은 바로 방법론의 정체성과 관련된 철학적 패러다임에 대한 논쟁이라는 점에 주목할 필요가 있다. 본 연구에서는 두 방법론의 등장과 각 진영 내에서 분화와 변화를 둘러싼 논쟁들에 대한 분석을 통해 두 방법론의 철학적, 절차적 그리고 기법적 측면에서 수렴되고 분산되는 면을 정리함으로써 두 방법론의 통합을 위한 이론적 기반을 마련하고자 한다. 둘째, 통합적 방법론 개발의 실제적 근거제시 단계로서 근거이론과 현상학 각각의 등장, 분화와 변화에서 나타난 수렴점들을 평정절차로 삼아서 국내 상담분야에서 이와 같은 근거이론과 현상학의 철학적 패러다임, 절차 그리고 기법의 이해 및 활용경향에 대한 비판적 분석이 필요하다. 먼저 기존 상담분야에서 질적 연구의 동향에 대한 연구에서 활용된 평정절차 - 출처, 출판년도, 연구주제와 대상, 연구방법, 타당도 검증 등 - 는 근거이론과 현상학의 활용경향을 드러내는 데는 적합하지 않다. 왜냐하면 이와 같은 평정절차는 근거이론과 현상학뿐만 아니라 질적 연구 일반의 활용 동향에 대한 중립적 분석에 적절할 뿐, 두 방법론 고유의 전제와 절차와 기법 및 각 진영 내에서 창안자와 계승자들 간의 논쟁을 통한 방법론의 분화와 변화에 대한 연구자들의 이해와 활용에서 나타난 경향과 문제점을 밝히는 데는 불필요한 것도 있고 또한 불충분하기 때문이다. 둘째, 동향연구라면 기간을 길게 잡을 수도 있겠지만, 본 연구는 최근 방법론의 분화와 변화에 대한 연구자들의 이해 및 활용경향에 대한 비판적 분석이기에 2016년부터 2020년까지 최근 5년 동안으로 기간을 한정했다. 셋째, 국내 상담분야에서 근거이론과 현상학을 활용한 질적 연구 논문들의 출처를 상담분야의 두 학술지인 『상담학연구』와 『상담 및 심리치료』로 한정한 까닭은 두 학술지가 국내 상담분야의 대표적인 양대 학회의 학술지로서 상담분야의 타 학술지에 비해서 심사자의 권위와 심사기준의 엄격함을 유지하고 있기에 두 학술지에 게재된 근거이론과 현상학 활용 질적 연구논문들에 대한 분석은 곧바로 상담분야의 연구자들의 두 방법론에 대한 이해와 활용경향의 가늠자가 될 수 있기 때문이다. 세 번째 통합적 방법론 모델 제시단계로서 현상학적 근거이론의 철학적 패러다임, 절차와 기법 및 연구과정에 대한 모형을 제시할 필요가 있다. 먼저 현상학적 근거이론의 철학적 패러다임으로서 Dilthey의 해석학의 원리인 체험-표현-이해의 공식을 기반으로 Husserl, Sartre, Merleau -Ponty의 현상학, Heidegger, Gadamer, Ricoeur의 해석학 그리고 Dewey, Mead의 프래그머티즘 및 상징적 상호작용주의의 통합 가능성을 논할 것이다. 둘째, 연구 전반에 걸쳐 판단중지와 현상학적 환원을 통한 이론적 민감성 개발을 논할 것이다. 셋째, 이론적 민감성 개발을 통해 드러나는 연구자의 선이해가 연구주제, 문제설정, 자료수집, 자료분석, 연구결과 평가의 과정에서 어떤 해석학적 순환의 단계를 밟아야 하는지에 대해 논할 것이다. 넷째, 자료분석에서 근거이론 기법으로서 개방코딩을 위한 지속적 비교분석과 현상학의 기법으로서 지향성과 행위의 합목적성 분석의 기법을 상세히 설명할 것이다. 다섯째, 근거이론의 기법으로서 이론구성을 위한 축코딩과 선택코딩의 기법과 현상학의 상황 구조적 기술과 일반 구조적 기술의 통합 가능성을 설명할 것이다. 여섯째, 연구결과의 평가의 방식으로서 상황 구조적 기술을 연구 참여자와 공유하면서 소통을 통해 피드백을 받고, 일반 구조적 기술을 완성한 연후에 연구 전반에 대해서 동료 연구자나 전문가와 소통을 통해 상호 주관적 타당성 확보를 해나가는 지평융합의 원리를 제안할 것이다. 일곱 번째 연구 전반에 걸쳐 현상학적 근거이론의 수행과정에 대한 모형을 제시한다.
연구2는 상담심리학의 질적 연구 방법론으로서 현상학적 근거이론의 적용을 위해 대학생의 열등감 경험에 대한 질적 연구를 수행하고자 한다. 이를 통해 상담 심리학의 고유한 질적 방법론으로서 새롭게 개발된 현상학적 근거이론을 적용할 때 대학생의 열등감 경험의 구조와 과정을 이해할 수 있는 이론적 모형을 제시하고, 이때 현상학적 근거이론의 방법론적 차별성을 부각시키고자 한다.
