NEET refers to Not in Education, Employment or Training, which encompasses unemployed young adults and young adults outside the labor force. Considering the limited social networks and high levels of depression among NEET young adults, more exploration is required, especially in the COVID-19 recession. The purpose of this study is to explore the current situation of Korean NEET young adults by ascertaining the mediating effect of social support in the relationship between social networks and depression. The study used secondary cross-sectional data from ‘The Survey on the Living Conditions and Welfare Needs of Youths’ provided by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. For data analysis, the study performed SPSS Process Macro and bootstrapping method.
The analysis of the main variables indicated that NEET young adults had an average score of 6.92 (SD = 1.90) in their social network while the average score of social support was 79.26 (SD = 13.32) out of 100. The descriptive statistics of depression showed a mean value of 34.31 (SD = 10.64) out of 100. Additionally, NEET young adults (M = 34.31, SD = 10.64) experienced more depression than non-NEET young adults (M = 32.55, SD = 10.01). Lastly, the result of the mediation analysis indicated that social support fully mediated the relationship between NEET young adults’ social network and depression (β = -.332, p <.001).
Based on the results, there were several important practical and policy implications for alleviating NEET young adults’ depression. For practical implications, the study suggested discovering blind spotted NEET young adults and customized case management interventions. For policy level implication, the study postulated a triangular interorganizational system between the government, public, and non-profit sectors to provide social support services.
