Korea's subjective happiness index for children and adolescents was the lowest among OECD countries for 7 years from 2009 to 2016, excluding 2015, and in 2019, it ranked 20th out of 22 OECD countries, still in the lower ranks. to be. Suicide-related indicators, which are red flags of adolescent mental health, suggest that the difficulties experienced by Korean adolescents are increasing year by year. According to the 2018 Basic Analysis Report on the Human Rights of Children and Adolescents in Korea, 1 in 3 (33.8%) of Korean adolescents experienced suicidal thoughts, and the trend is increasing every year. Even 4.4% of students who have made a specific plan to commit suicide, and 3.1% of students who have attempted suicide. Such a low level of happiness in adolescence may cause physical and psychosocial problems such as suicide or addiction, and may trigger developmental inhibition and maladaptive problems in adolescence. In order to improve the happiness of Korean adolescents who are threatened to such a high level, I tried to develop a adolescents flourish scale that reflects the characteristics of Korean adolescents, and to suggest specific interventions by revealing the components of adolescent flourish.
In this study, based on the well-being theory of Seligman(2020), the flourish of Korean adolescents is defined based on the concept of flourish, which includes subjective well-being from a hedonism perspective and psychological well-being from a eudaimonism perspective. Based on this theoretical background, a questionnaire was prepared for the flourish experience, and a survey was conducted for Korean adolescents between the ages of 14 and 19. The concept and components of the concept of flourish of adolescents were redefined based on the contents of the responses from the experiences of flourish experienced by the adolescents, and basic preliminary questions were developed based on these concepts. The developed basic preliminary questions were composed of final preliminary questions through two content validity verification processes. A preliminary survey was conducted targeting teenagers aged 14 to 19 years old and an exploratory factor analysis was conducted. This survey was conducted using the items extracted through exploratory factor analysis, and the flourish scale for adolescents was finally completed through confirmatory factor analysis, convergent validity and discriminant validity verification, criterion-related validity verification, and reliability analysis.
As a result of the study, it was finally found that the four-factor structure of the flourish scale for adolescents was appropriate, and the sub-factors of the flourish scale for adolescents were 'positive emotion', 'productive engagement', 'positive relationship', and 'purpose of life'. The suitability of the four-factor structure was confirmed, and the validity of this scale and each sub-factor was confirmed through convergent and discriminant validity verification. It has proven its validity. As a result of the reliability analysis, the internal consistency reliability of the flourish scale for adolescents was found to be at a reliable level of .901, and the test-retest reliability analysis also confirmed that this scale has stability over time.
In this study, based on the well-being theory of Seligman(2020), the developmental stage characteristics and cultural characteristics of Korean adolescents were reflected to develop the flourish scale for adolescents. Through this study, by revealing the components of the flourish among Korean adolescents, specific interventions were presented to enhance the happiness of Korean adolescents. As the results of this study suggest in the areas of counseling and education, the points of application of this scale were presented. In addition, the limitations of this study and future research directions were discussed.
