The strategic alliance is a vehicle for a firm to obtain resources and capabilities from external sources. The differential level of resources and capabilities between the strategic alliance partners presents the differential level of potential value appropriation and spillover, contributing to the differential level of firm value generation. Thus, the differential level of stakeholder management, one of the capabilities that a firm can obtain through the strategic alliance, can influence on the differential firm value generation between partners in an alliance. Drawing on the extended resource based view, which extended the scope of a firm’s resources and capabilities from the firm's inside to the boundary of alliance with other firms, this research demonstrated that the differential level of stakeholder management between partners in a strategic alliance affects the differential level of value generation to each partner by employing the event study methodology. Additionally, this study proved that the institutional environments where the strategic alliance operates moderates the relationship between differential stakeholder management and differential value generation for the partners in a strategic alliance.
