Confucian Scholar is a learner who believes in Confucianism and practices morals in Confucianism, taking these as mission. During Josun Dynasty, Confucian scholars followed Josun’s foundation idea, Anti-buddhism Pro-confucianism Policy, accepting pro-confucianism and Neo-confucianism as basis of educational idea for their ongoing courses of learning and they also participated in politics in the way of their club activity and self-governing activity.
Confucian scholars’ attire is the clothes that Josun Dynasty Confucian scholar used to wear, Confucian scholars were called ‘Cheonggeum’, and their attire was called ‘Cheonggeumbok’. Cheonggeumbok was started with Nansam, changed into Hongdanryeong, settled as Confucian scholar’s attire with Dopo. This shows that the name of Cheonggeumbok hasn’t changed, however, its form and composition have changed.
Confucian scholar’s attire has been subject of steady research and study on its meaning as a kind of attire to Confucianism, and its formative characteristics derived from politics, idea and school, however, study on its transition has been insignificant. Since researches and studies until today have provided general outline on the aspect of transition of Confucian scholar’s attire, it is necessary to specifically go over Confucian scholar’s attire on around 18C when its transition was made from Hongdanryeong to Dopo. As for study method, in order to contemplate the historical flow of Confucian scholar’s attire and matters discussed on how to wear in Royal Court, historical material in literature including liturgical record and chronological record will be subject to consideration, and painting works and other visually considerable medium will be used to go over details on formative characteristics and dress-up models of the attire.
Since the era of the King Seong Jong, as of Gwanghae Gun 2nd year, Sep. 1610, Hongdanryeong which was worn as official clothing worn in the course of performing daily duties at work before went through change in its usage to Government clothes for public affairs. In Jung Jong 32th year, 1537, the Record of Josun Dynasty’s Ambassador『Sajoseonrok(使朝鮮錄)』 which recorded that Yonggyeong Gong, Myoung’s ambassador, was sent to Josun including its departure and arrival to his home, showed that Confucian scholars were dressed up with official clothing. With this, our study is focused on the flow that Hongdanryeong was started as Confucian scholar’s ordinary attire and changed to minister’s attire, and how it was changed until the beginning of 18C, and additionally, in the middle of 18C, Hongdanryeong was changed to Dopo, and the cause of this transition will be the subject of our contemplation.
In the process of transition aspect of Hongdanryeong, there was no change in the composition of Hongdanryeong as minister’s attire, however, fashion trend in those days and discussion made in royal court caused difference in its red shade. This was contemplated to divide the time of red shade change period in order to grasp the timing of change in Hongdanryeong as Confucian scholar’sattire while the change of red shade in Danghagwan appeared identical to that of Hongdanryeong as Confucian scholar’s attire.
From the end of 15C to the middle of 16C, it can be found out that regardless of class of minister, Dangsanggwan(senate) or Danghagwan(congressman), they wore Hongdanryeong as light red Danryeong(ceremonial robe) and Confucian scholars didn’t wear it as it used be, but as light red Danryeong, too.
Between the middle and the end of 16C, Hongram pushed light red color, earthy red away and the attire was dyed with Hongram to bring deep red in fashion megatrend, which made the Hongdanryeong of Dangsanggwan and Danghagwan in deep red and it is difficult to define the color of Confucian scholars’ Hongdanryeong as deep red, however, those were all in red shade, therefore, it could be defined in this way due to its similarity.
Between the beginning and the middle of 17C, in Sun Jo 33th year(1600), Danryeong of funeral garment was ordered to be pale red, and as for Confucian scholars’ attire, in Gwanghae Gun 2nd year(1610), record shows that it was insisted that there was no ground for the idea that ministers’ attire differed from ordinary scholars’ and ministers and ordinary scholars should wear light red Danryeong altogether, which give us conclusion that both wore light red Hongdanryeong.
In this study that contemplates the transition of 18C Confucian scholar’s attire, record shows that between the end of 17C and the beginning of 18C, the era of the King Young Jo made Dangsanggwan wear light red and Danghagwan wear red, which makes it clear that all of them used to wear Hongdanryeong. From 16C to 17C, Confucian scholars wore Hongdanryeong, therefore, it seems that until the end of 17C to the beginning of 18C when both Dangsanggwan and Danghagwan wore Hongdanryeong, Confucian scholars could also have worn Hong danryeong. This can be confirmed with confucian scholars shown in painting works like Bukseaseoneundo[『北塞宣恩圖』(1664)] and Tamrasunryeokdo[『耽羅巡歷圖』(1702)].
Confucian scholar’s attire seems to change in its usage in the similar structure as shown in the transition of the attire of Dangsanggwan and Danghagwan, however, the attire set consists of Yugeon and red-shade Danryeong, meaning that its set didn’t change and only its color showed change.
Main cause of the transition of 18C confucian scholar’s attire is that Confucian scholars insisted on “Genuine Blue Garment for integrity[CheongCheongJageum(靑靑子衿)]” to follow ancient legend of Cheonggeumbok, which brought out various discussion on Confucian scholar’s attire, however, since the King Jeong Jo, Confucian scholar’s attire was settled with Dopo.
