The purpose of this study is to examine the mediation effects of
self-regulation on the relationship between mother-child interaction and
infant's smart device immersion tendency. Subjects in this study are
four-year-old infants along with their mothers and 214 teachers at daycare
centers in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, Incheon, Daejeon and Jeju Island.
Questionnaires were utilized to collect the necessary data, and then to draw
    a conclusion.
Several methods were applied to gather information. The information for
the mother-child interaction was measured through the revised version(Choi,
2011) of Assessment Profile for Early Childhood Programs originally developed
by Abbott-shim(1987). The Infants' immersion tendency toward smart devices
was assessed by modifying the Smartphone Overdependence Scale developed
by the Korea Information Society Agency as a smart device(2016). Also, the
infant's self-regulation ability was estimated by the modified tool applied for
teachers(Kim, 2008), which was originally developed for parents by Lee(2003). The descriptive statistics of each measurement variable was estimated by
collected data through questionnaires, and then hierarchical regression
analysis was conducted to correlate Pearson's correlation analysis with each
measurement variable. Also, three-step mediated regression analysis was
carried out to verify whether self-regulation plays a role as a parameter in
the relationship between mother-child interaction and infant smart device
immersion tendency. Following the verification process, a Sobel test was also
conducted to validate statistical significance from the outcome.
A summary of the process is as follows.
First, the general trend of measurement variables shows that the
mother-child interaction is generally positive at a higher level than usual.
The tendency of infants to immerse themselves in smart devices is lower
than normal, and the self-control of infants is higher than normal. Looking
at the differences in measurement variables according to demographic
characteristics, self-control ability differs by gender, and mother-child
interactions differ by mother's work patterns. Second, looking at the correlation between variables, the earlier the
infant's first use of smart devices is, the higher the infant's tendency to
immerse in smart devices is. The more time for a smart device a mother
uses, the less mother-child interaction is, and the faster the first to use for
an infant to use a smart device is, and the higher the tendency to immerse
in smart devices is. Also, the more positive mother-child interaction is made,
the higher the level of infant’s self-control is and the higher infant's
self-control ability is, the lower the tendency to immerse themselves in
smart devices is. Third, by controlling demographic characteristics and smart device usage
characteristics, it is shown that the first for infant to use smart devices and
mother-child interactions affect the infant's smart device immersion
tendency. Fourth, in the relationship between mother-child interaction and infant's
smart device immersion, the infant's self-control has a partial mediation
effect. In conclusion, sensitive and positive mother-child interactions influence the
reduction of the infant's tendency to immerse in smart devices through the
    infant's self-control.
