This study considered social memory preservation and the role Archivist based on the concept of "social memory" accepted by the Archival academic world. Since the study of social memory has already been actively discussed in the West, it has also been developed around Western memory discourse in Korea. However, there are not many studies that seek to link memory discourse of Western Archival academic circles with modern Korean history or current society. Therefore, this study has become a social memory, but it has been considered a case of the Committee to Reestablish the People’s Revolutionary Party, which is currently considered to have not ended due to compensation issues.
To do this, we first conducted a theoretical study of what social memory is and how the concept of social memory was accepted in the Korean Archival academic world. Secondly, as an example of a change in social memory, the contents of the People’s Revolutionary Party Reestablish Committee case were general covered. Third, analyzed the sentencing of the People’s Revolutionary Party Reestablish Committee case, the investigation Commission report, and the records of the victims' families. Based on this, I thought about the role of archive and Archivist not only for past but also for contemporary social memories.
In particular, the case of the Committee to Reestablish the People’s Revolutionary Party has two meanings. The first is that private records are as important as public records for the reconstruction of cases. The second is that the case of the Committee to Reestablish the People’s Revolutionary Party has become a social memory, but it is still an ongoing event. In conclusion, social memory preservation should recognize community records on various topics as colleagues in order to explore ways to preserve and support social memory. Archivist also needs to keep his possibilities open as an activist, such as informing the victims of the damage based on past records or recording the current situation in relation to the status of the case of the Committee to Reestablish the People’s Revolutionary Party
