I have investigated the chemical and optical interaction between molecule and nanocrystals such as metal nanoparticle and semiconductor nanocrystals. Irradiation of light on both metal and semiconductor results excitation of electron, which may be applied to photo induced chemical reaction, heat generation, and energy harvesting. In this thesis, I investigate Au and semiconductor nanocrystals, respectively.
First, when light is irradiated to metal nanoparticles such as Au nanoparticle, plasmon is excited, which results in enhancement of electric field around metal. The enhanced electric field result in SERS phenomena, which exhibit excellent detection sensitivity to observe few adsorbed molecules on metal. The plasmon decay, also, may results in chemical reaction, or heat dissipation. In my experiment, I observed plasmon induced esterification of boronic acid, by observing SERS spectra of reactants and products. I investigated the possibility of reaction path would be different from base catalyzed esterification of boronic acid. The plasmon would excite the reactant (boronic acid) and change the reactivity, which may result in different reaction pathway. This result represents that the plasmon would change the reactivity, which would be helpful to design other reaction pathway for example, conversion of basic condition to mild pH.
The plasmon decay also affect the rise of temperature of metal nanoparticle. I analyzed the emission of Au nanorods, and observed the non-linear increase of emission intensity when the irradiation power was increased. I hypothesized the non-linear increase of emission intensity would be resulted from a damping of plasmon, which may be attributed from electron – phonon scattering. I calculated the temperature of metal, by both population of thermally excited phonon (Ianti-Stokes/IStokes) and scattering efficiency decrease, which is arisen from lattice heating. The calculated temperature only shows linear increase at the calculation of scattering efficiency decrease method. This means that the excited plasmon would be dissipated to heat by lattice vibration. In other words, I could estimate the temperature of Au nanoparticle by emission spectrum.
The interaction of plasmon with molecule also results in optical response of plasmon resonance. I investigated the induced circular dichroism at plasmon resonance frequency of achiral Ag nanocube (AgNC), by chiral molecule. The CD signal of molecule is observed at UV range whereas plasmon resonance of AgNC, especially higher order and dipole mode, which would be observed at visible range. I observed the induced CD at plasmon resonance is affected by size, corner sharpness and inter-particle distance of AgNC. In case of AgNC monomer, the higher order mode shows induced CD whereas dipole mode is activated when inter-particle distance AgNC monomer is getting closer. I compared the experimental result with theoretical model and they are in accordance. I could conclude that interaction of molecule and metal nanoparticle also results in unique optical response. This have potent to analyze the aggregation mechanism of biomolecules such as amylose fibrils.
Second, I investigate the interaction of molecule and semiconductor nanocrystals such as core/shell QDs and MoS2 sheet with spectroscopic methods. I characterized the interfacial structure of core/shell QDs with medium energy ion scattering spectroscopy, and conclude the synthesis method affect the interfacial structure of core/shell QDs. QDs with smooth interface such as chemical composition gradient alloy shows higher emission intensity.
I applied the chemical composition gradient alloy QDs for photovoltaic device to harvest the solar energy. To increase the stability of QDs, I fabricated QDs-SiO2 matrix and verified that it shows high stability to acids, and heat. Such QDs-SiO2 layer convert UV to visible light, which is absorbed by P3HT and show high quantum efficiency in photovoltaic device. The quantum efficiency as increase approximately ~ 10 %, when I applied QDs-SiO2 layer as a color converter. This means that QDs layer, which would be easily tuned emission wavelength, have potent to increase the quantum efficiency of absorber which show high absorbance at visible range.
I also investigated the mechanism when photon’s energy is converted to hydrogen evolution reaction at the surface of MoS2 sheet. I generated various amount of defects on MoS2 layer, and optimized the defects on MoS2 for the HER catalysis. The amount of defects was verified by photoluminescence intensity of MoS2. Also, the emission lifetime shows that the defects would enable charge transfer between MoS2 and reactants. The HER catalysis was observed by CV spectroscopy, and the optimized amount of defects show good catalytic activity. The modulation of defects may elongate the life time of excited electrons, which increase the chance to collision with reactants, result increase of reaction yield.
