인간과 동물의 공존을 위한 동물기록 및 아카이브 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근의 환경운동은 오염을 막고 자연 파괴를 반대하는 차원을 넘어 자연과 생태계 전반을 생각하고 인간 아닌 다른 생명과의 공존을 모색해야 한다는 방향으로 확장하고 있다. 이러한 변화와 맞물려 동물권에 관심이 높아지고 동물에 대한 이슈가 인간과 동물의 공존이라는 시대적 소명 아래 사회의 중심 의제로 떠오르고 있다. 그러나 우리나라의 동물권 운동은 사회적 비용을 둘러싼 갈등과 축산업과의 이해 충돌, 동물권에 대한 이해 부족 등으로 사회적 공감대와 저변을 확대하는 데 어려움을 겪고 있다.
이 논문은 이러한 사회적 실태를 문제 삼아 동물권에 대한 사회적 공감대를 확장하고 인간과 동물의 공존을 모색하기 위하여 동물기록을 매개로 한 사회적 소통과 공론장으로서의 아카이브 설립을 제안한다. 구체적으로 설정한 연구주제는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 동물에 대한 사회적 인식은 어떠한가? 우리는 동물을 어떠한 시각으로 바라보고, 관계를 맺고 살아가는가.
둘째, 동물기록이란 무엇인가? 동물기록의 종류는 무엇이 있고 어떤 특징을 지니고 있는가.
셋째, 인간과 동물이 관계를 맺고 사는 삶을 기록으로 보존하는 일은 동물권 담론에서 어떠한 의미가 있는가? 동물과 인간 아카이브의 의의와 한계는 무엇인가.
넷째, 동물과 인간 아카이브는 어떤 모습이어야 하는가? 어떤 기록을 수집해야 하고, 그 기록의 주체는 누구이며, 아카이빙은 어떻게 이루어져야 하는가. 또 소통 방법은 무엇이 있는가.
이에 대한 연구결과를 요약하면 첫째, 동물에 대한 사회적 인식은 소셜 미디어를 분석한 결과 반려동물과의 상호작용 사이에서 형성되는 정서적 유대감에 반해 동물권에 대한 사회적 논의나 합의는 매우 부족한 실정이었다. 동물권 담론을 형성하기 위한 동물기록의 보존 및 관리가 필요하다고 판단되었다.
둘째, 동물기록은 말을 할 수 없는 동물에 대한 기록으로서, 인간에 의해서 생산되고 수집, 해석되기에 동물의 이야기인 동시에 인간의 이야기가 된다. 기록을 보는 사람들로 하여 슬픔과 기쁨, 분노 등 즉각적인 감정을 불러일으키며 그 휘발성이 큰 특징이 있다. 또한 공공과 민간 영역에 걸쳐 다양하게 생산된다.
셋째, 인간과 동물의 상호작용 과정에서 생산되는 기록물을 수집 및 보존·관리하는 일을 통해 우리 사회는 인간과 동물의 서사를 복원할 수 있다. 또한 우리 삶의 질에 영향을 주는 동물과 관련한 이슈들을 점검해봄으로써 삶의 질을 향상시킬 수 있다. 무엇보다 동물과 인간의 이분법적 사고를 넘어 동물에 대한 새로운 관점을 정립할 수 있다.
마지막으로 다양한 출처에서 생산되는 동물기록의 특성을 반영한 주제 수집형 아카이브로서 동물과 인간의 상호작용과 관계성을 드러내는 동물과 인간 아카이브를 제안한다. 아카이브는 정보 제공과 증거적 역할을 하면서도 동물권의 이해 증진과 담론을 형성하는 데 기여할 수 있으려면 소통과 공유의 장으로서의 성격을 지녀야 한다. 이를 위해 기호로서 기록의 의미 만들기 과정과 공론장 역할을 통한 퍼블릭 히스토리의 추진을 제시한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The latest environmental movement is expanding beyond preventing pollution and opposing natural destruction to think of nature and ecosystem as a whole and seek coexistence with other life than human beings. Coupled with the changes, interest in the animal rights is rising and issues about animals are emerging as the central agenda of society. The nation's animal rights movement, however, is having difficulty expanding its consensus and social base due to conflicts over social costs, conflicts of interest with the livestock industry and a lack of understanding of the animal rights.
Taking issue with this social situation, the paper proposes to establish an archive as a social communication and public sphere with animal records in order to expand social consensus on the animal rights and seek the coexistence of humans and animals.
Specific research topics are as follows. First, what is the social perception of animals? Second, what is animal records? Third, what is the significance of preserving a record of human-animal life? Fourth, what should animal and human archives look like?
The results of this study are summarized as follows.
First, social media analysis shows that social discussions and agreements on animal rights are still very lacking compared to emotional bonds formed between interactions with pets. It was deemed necessary to preserve and manage animal records to form animal rights discourse.
Second, animal records are about animals that cannot speak. It is both an animal story and a human story because it is produced, collected and interpreted by humans. People who encounter records create instant emotions such as sadness, joy, and anger, and it is easily extinguished. It is also produced in a variety of areas across the public and private sectors.
Third, through the work of collecting and preserving records produced in the course of human-animal interaction, our society can restore human-animal narrative. We can also improve our quality of life by checking the issues related to animals that affect our quality of life. Above all, we can establish a new perspective on animals beyond the dichotomous thinking of animals and humans.
Finally, as a subject-collecting archive that reflects the characteristics of animal records produced from various sources, an archive that reveals the interaction and relationships between animals and humans is proposed. Animal and human archives should have a personality as a venue for communication and sharing, if they can contribute to enhancing understanding and discourse of animal rights while serving as information and evidence roles. we present the process of making the meaning of records as a symbol and the promotion of public history through the role of a public sphere.
