In order to process drastically increasing amount of web resources, new web technologies such as semantic web is entering our world. This study seeks to apply web semantic technology for improving record managing websites to respond to such change.
The selected case for this study is Korean History Online which is an united search engine for historic records. However, its integrated metadata-driven search engine does not ensure interoperability between varying records and different institutions as well as lacking in search efficiency.
In order to improve such issues, this study aimed to construct an ontology-based search engine for Korean History Online. Ontology and user interface were designed in three steps focusing on core technological factors of semantic searching suggested by KimYong. The ontology built in this study reused CJDOC-CRM which is an ontology model developed by ICOM to integrate information on cultural heritage and mapped out integrated metadata.
We had been able to ensure interoperability between record data through ontology by applying constructed ontology with records provided by Korean History Online. Also, the result confirmed that this ontology allows the system to describe various background information related to records compared to integrated metadata. It would be possible to promote more convenient data exchange and expansion by linking each data if stored records can be transformed into a form of data using ontology.
After the construction of the ontology, we suggested an appropriate user interface that can be applied on ontology search system by analyzing other websites which have integrated semantic web technology. Based on the analysis, it was suggested that facet navigation utilizing metadata of records is more suitable than currently installed integrated directory which is theme-based facet. Additionally, radial interaction and archival information model utilizing LOD have been suggested in order to better express the characteristic of link-based semantic information. Users can use the interface to understand the characteristic of semantic search and expand their search gradually.
The progress of this study is meaningful in that it detected problems by analyzing search system of Korea History Online and attempted to resolve this issue by taking a new approach with ontology and interface. However, the study is limited in that the study is limited within the boundary of theoretical practices and that actual system was not constructed. This limitation needs to be supplemented in future studies. We hope this study will serve as a clue leading to the development of new type of archival information service model for other web archives as well as Korean History Online.
