Rethinking the conventional impressions of diplomacy : evaluating president Donald Trump and his statements on North Korea

국문 초록 (Abstract)

선행연구를검토해본결과다수는북핵문제에대한도널드트럼프 대통령의 외교적 능력에 대한 의문점을 갖고 있다. 그러나 동시에 2018 년 목격된 북미관계는 이례적인 싱가폴 회담 개최로 새로운 도약을 기다리고 있다. 트럼프 대통령의 ‘외교’에 대한 비관적인 시선과 실제 경험적으로 발견된 북미관계 개선은 다음과 같은 연구 질문을 남긴다- 도널드 트럼프 대통령 개인의 대북인식은 어떠한가? 백악관에서 공개하는 대통령 공식 발언 자료와 트럼프 대통령의 트윗을 모두 검토하여 비교 분석한 결과, 도널드 트럼프 대통령은 ‘온건한 현상유지’(moderate status quo) 성향을 갖고 있다. 리더십 특성 분석(Leadership Trait Analysis)과 운영 코드 분석 (Operational Code Analysis)을 사용하여 도널드 트럼프 대통령의 대북인식을 측정하였고 연구 결과 도널드 트럼프 대통령은 북한에 대해 매우 ‘외교적’(diplomatic)인 성향을 갖고 있다. 연구 결과의 유효성을 검토하기 위해 시계열 분석 (time-series analysis)을 사용하였고 결과 값을 빌 클린턴 대통령의 결과 값과 대조해 본 결과, 도널드 트럼프 대통령의 대북 인식은 공세적이지 않았다. 결과적으로 해당 논문은 일반적으로 형성된 도널드 트럼프 대통령에 대한 평가와 상이한 연구 결과를 도출하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study assesses the leadership characteristics and cognition of President Donald Trump in the context of North Korean denuclearization. The divergence between the conventional impressions of Donald Trump’s diplomacy towards Pyongyang and the appearance of unprecedented momentum between the long time adversaries by the symbolic Singapore Summit in 2018 leaves a contending research puzzle- how is his leadership revealed from his statements as the President of the United States? This research simultaneously utilizes official remarks found from the White House archives and his personally tailored tweets on North Korea to empirically determine his leadership attributes. Based on the Leadership Trait Analysis and the Operational Code Analysis, this research concludes that the leadership of the President Donald Trump towards North Korea is not so ‘aggressive’ after all. The scores retrieved from the methodologies display that his character and worldview are within the range of “moderate status quo”, based on the provided thresholds from the existing literature. The time-series analysis and the direct comparisons of the scores to former President Bill Clinton are included in order to test the validity of the findings. In sum, the interpreted results from this thesis contradict the conventional impressions of President Donald Trump’s diplomacy on North Korea.
