This thesis intends to analyze the visual aspects of images shot by the method of high-speed photography. I define the characteristics of high-speed photographic images as a paradox that stems from the presence of a continuing phenomenon deprived of the subject’s context and temporality and analyze the differences between high-speed photographic images and the form of the external world we perceive. Furthermore, I aim to examine how these characteristics of high-speed photographic images are consistently used in my work and employed in my solo exhibition UnveiledScape which took place in May 2017. Also, I would like to explore the possible discourse that can be suggested for contemporary photography art.
High-speed photography has been studied more in the realm of science than of art. In the context of science, high-speed photography is divided into differing ranges from 1/50-1/500 second high-speed to 1/1,000,000 second ultra-high-speed. A paper published in Nature (2014) introduced continuous images shot at 1/100,000,000,000 second shutter speed. In the first part of this thesis, I suggest that in the vast spectrum of high-speed photography, the thesis and exhibition will cover the range of high-speed and true high-speed photography distinctively.
In addition, I would like to visually address how our physical visual perception of a single image when converted into 1/10 second shutter speed is different from our memorized image, based on the perception, and make an analogy to Zeno’s so called Arrow Paradox. I define the visual and aesthetic meaning of high-speed photography as the aesthetic of paradox, not for sake of sophistry, but on the ground that paradoxes, including Zeno’s, can become a cue to critically think about the phenomena we take for granted.
Such artworks that make viewers think about the depicted object or phenomena rather than accept the landscape and passively view them have already existed before high-speed photography. Thus, this thesis not only discusses high-speed photography but also how the idea of paradox has been used before photography focusing on surrealist paintings. I also state how since then the paradox of time observed in high-speed photography has materialized modern photography art, including my own, created prior to the thesis exhibition.
Subsequently, I examine how the three project-oriented pieces titled One Life, Absolute Resistance, and The Tempest shown in the UnveiledScape exhibition realize the aesthetic of paradox. The show title combines two words: Unveiled and Scape indicating that though subjects and phenomena are different, they are only revealed through high-speed photography, realizing the aesthetic of paradox. I also address the meaning of these from the perspective of randomness, the beauty of coincidence, numerous possibilities, and sublimity.
Since high-speed photography resides outside our perceptual territory, it turns to unobservable phenomena; hence, its outcomes are also the products of recurring accidents as opposed to concrete planning. In this regard, it distinguishes itself from the aesthetic value of conventional photography. For I intended to observe a subject with curiosity, the high-speed photographic image is not a mere result of observing and thinking but a point of departure for thinking. Therefore, interpreting high-speed photography requires a different approach from the conventional notion of photography that is based on documenting an observable object.
In that regard, I hope that this thesis can contribute to interpreting high-speed photography in the context of contemporary art discourse rather than of science or a history of photography.
