Recently, the issue of quality of work has received much attention, leading to research related to good jobs; however, less attention has been given to quality of work and women’s mental health. This study aimed to examine the influence of the level of work quality on women’s depressive symptoms, and to understand the role of work-family conflict in the relationship between quality of work and depressive symptoms among married working women with young children.
For the analysis, the 5th wave of Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families (KLoWF) was utilized. Study sample included 1,457 married female workers aged 55 and under with children. Quality of life composed of work characteristics, stability, potential, compensation, work condition, and human relationships. CES-D 10 was used to measure the level of depression. Work-family conflict was divided into work-to-family conflict and family-to-work conflict.
Results of the study included the following. First, among quality of work, work characteristics and work condition influenced women’s depressive symptoms. Second, quality of work in general also was associated with depression in that better quality of life lessened the level of depression. Third, work-to-family conflict was found to moderate the relationship between quality of work and depression. The increase in quality of work as well as lower work-to-family conflict lessened the level of depression. Lastly, family-to-work conflict was found to independently increase the level of depression among working women with children.
The study suggests the need for institutional enhancement and programs to promote the mental health of married working women with young children. At the national level, policies are needed that focus on enhancing women’s work quality and decreasing work-family conflict. At the same time, traditional gender roles related to domestic work and care work needs a major shift and more males need to take responsibility in both domestic and care work. This study is meaningful in that it confirmed the relationship between married working women’s quality of work and mental health. More studies are needed that focus on women’s general mental health in association with working conditions and work-family balance.
