South Korea is obligated to reduce greenhouse gases according to the "Paris Agreement", which is the new climate change regime, and regionally, the problems of fine dust are becoming worse. As a countermeasure to the aspects of fuel for transportation regarding the two environmental problems currently being faced, it is necessary to reduce environmental pollution released from diesel cars, and for this purpose, the expansion of the supply of biodiesel can be considered. Since it can be promptly applied without additional infrastructure, the expansion of the supply of biodiesel can be regarded as the most realistic countermeasure.
Although in South Korea a certain amount of biodiesel is already blended in diesel and distributed according to the Renewable Fuel Standards(RFS) in the transportation sector implemented on July 31, 2015, since biodiesel has poor cold properties compared to diesel, start-up failure of the vehicle may occur due to a decrease in cold flow property and Plugging of the filters in winter, and thus it is difficult to continually increase the blending ratio. Therefore, in this study, the following contents were confirmed through experiments in order to improve the cold properties of biodiesel and biodiesel-blended fuel: “Limitation of additional blending of biodiesel in diesel for cold weather, influence on cold properties by blending biodiesel or adding a WAFI(Wax Anti-Settling Flow Improver) in diesel base for cold weather and the resulting changes in density and kinematic viscosity, and the composition and changes in cold properties of Palm BD using distillation.”
First, it was confirmed that the maximum additional blending ratios of biodiesel satisfying the legal quality standards for the cold properties of diesel for cold weather were up to 5% for Palm BD and 20% for UCO BD(Used Cooking Oil BD). In addition, WAFI exhibited a more significant effect of improving the cold properties in diesel blended with UCO BD. In the overall analysis, there was almost no change in the CP(Cloud Point), but the PP(Pour Point) and the CFPP(Cold Filter Plugging Point) were improved, and among these, the PP was improved to the greatest extent. The influence of adding WAFI to each biodiesel-blended fuel on density was insignificant, and the kinematic viscosity did not satisfy the quality standards when 50,000 ppm of WAFI was added in BD100. In addition, Palm BD, which has cold properties, was subjected to an experiment in which the composition of the saturated fatty acids was changed through distillation, and the cold properties were tested. As a result, the overall amount of the saturated fatty acids was decreased by 30% or more in the residue sample after 95%-cut distillation, compared to the amount before distillation. Accordingly, it was analyzed that the CP and the PP were decreased by 14℃ to be 4℃ and 2℃, respectively, and the CFPP was decreased by 15℃ to be 2℃, which indicated that cold properties were significantly improved.
