(Korea version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index: PSQI-K)이다.

This study aimed to investigate test anxiety, smartphone overdependence, and sleep quality for undergraduate students who are the people using smartphone the most, and to examine the relationship between these factors. To achieve this purpose, four research questions were set as follows: (1) 'What is the smartphone usage pattern in the research subjects?', (2) 'What are the extents of test anxiety, smartphone overdependence and sleep quality of the research subjects?', (3) 'Is there a difference in the extents of test anxiety, smartphone overdependence and sleep quality depending on general traits and smartphone usage pattern of the research subjects?', and (4) 'Do test anxiety, smartphone overdependence and sleep quality correlate in the research subjects?'.
A survey on test anxiety, smartphone overdependence and sleep quality was conducted for 255 undergraduate students, aged 20 to 29, attending one of five universities located in Seoul Metropolitan Area and using smartphones. 7 questionnaires were excluded from the analysis due to insincere and incomplete answers. Thus, total 210 questionnaires were used in analyses.
In this study, the Revised Test Anxiety Scale (RTA) was used for measuring test anxiety. The RTA was originally developed by Benson and El-Zahhar(1994) and was adapted by Cho Yong-Rae(2008). For measuring smartphone overdependence, self-reported scale developed by National Information Society Agency(2011) was used, which was designed to measure smartphone overdependence for adults. For evaluating sleep quality, the Korean version of the PSQI (PSQI-K) was used, which was developed by Sohn et al.(2012). They developed the PSQI-K by translating the original Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI) developed by Buysse et al.(1989) into Korean and verified its reliability and validity.
The collected survey data were analyzed using SPSS. To analyze the difference in extents of test anxiety, smartphone overdependence and sleep quality depending on the subjects’ general traits and smartphone usage pattern, t-test and one way ANOVA were conducted. To identify the correlation between test anxiety, smartphone overdependence and sleep quality, Pearson's correlation coefficient was used.
The findings of this study were derived as follows. First, the analysis results for smartphone usage pattern indicate that duration of using smartphones is more than 4 years and their daily usage hours are longer than 4 hours. The subjects mostly use their smartphones for SNS and internet surfing. They also responded that they were by and large satisfied with their smartphone use.
Second, the analysis results for the extents of test anxiety, overdependence on smartphone and sleep quality show that the number of subjects who fall into type A(low test anxiety group), B(middle test anxiety group) and C(high test anxiety group) of the test anxiety self-assessment category is 99, 84, and 27 respectively. For smartphone overdependence, the number of respondents who fall into general user group, potential risk group and high risk group is 177, 22, and 11 respectively. For sleep quality, based on the average scores of their self-reported questionnaire answers, 67 people responded that their sleep quality is good, while 143 people who responded that their sleep quality is poor.
Third, the analysis results for the difference in the extents of test anxiety, smartphone overdependence and sleep quality indicate that only tolerance has significant influence among subfactors of smartphone overdependence by gender. It is also indicated that females show higher tolerance than males. On the other hand, smartphone usage duration is significantly related with pursuing experience in the virtual world among subfactors of smartphone overdependence. Usage motive is significantly related with sleep quality. Rather than other functions commonly being used in smartphone, short message is the most influencing factor contributing to decrease of sleep quality.
Fourth, the analysis results for a relationship between test anxiety, smartphone overdependence and sleep quality indicate that test anxiety has positively significant relationship with smartphone overdependence and sleep quality. However, there was no significant relationship between withdrawal among subfactors of test anxiety and tension among subfactors of smartphone overdependence, and between sleep quality and withdrawal among subfactors of smartphone overdependence.
Comprehensively considering these findings in this study, the following conclusions were drawn. First, duration of using smartphone is longer than four years and daily usage is longer than four hours, which implies that use of smartphone takes large portion of people’s daily life. Second, the results of investigating sleep quality indicate that the subjects are in poor condition of sleep quality by and large. In this sense, it is necessary to take into account what time and how long they sleep. Third, in terms of gender, usage duration, and usage motive with smartphone use, there are significant differences in test anxiety, smartphone overdependence and sleep quality. Fourth, test anxiety, smartphone overdependence and sleep quality are positively correlated to each other. According to these findings, it is considered that overdependence on smartphone gets higher and quality of sleep gets poorer, as test anxiety increases.
