This study examined the costumes of the characters portrayed in <Higyong-ru Banghwoe-do>, an artwork that painted a social gathering of the aristocrats in the Joseon era. The characters’ social status described in this painting were classified into gwanryo, hyangri, ajeon, najang, chorye, akgong, and yeogi. The scope of examination included the head accessories, po type ornament, and small items attached to po. As the basic method of examination, a general comparison and analytical approach to the historical sources, including literature, paintings, and costume artifacts, were used.
As a result, this study was able to identify that among the officials and their costumes depicted in <Higyong-ru Banghwoe-do>, the incumbent officials worn dalryeong made of red blank fabric, a ranking belt that indicated the person’s rank in hierarchy, and black shoes. For instance, Gang Sum, whose rank was Jong 2-pum, worn a golden ornament-belt, while Choi Eungryong and Yu Geukgong, both of whom were Jong 3-pum officials, worn a silver ornament-belt, respectively. Nam Hyoyong, a former Jong 3-pum official, and Im Bok, under 5-pum official, worn a black gat and red jing-nyeong, along with blue-doah, respectively. Hyangris wore heukjukbanglip, white jing-nyeong, and blue-doah. Ajeons wore heuklip, white jing-nyeong with blue-doah. Najang wore chogun called aldoh with heukcheolrik and banbieui. Chorye wore heuklip, red cheolrik and chungmokdai. Akgong wore gamtu or somoja, one of red jing-nyeong, aekjueum, and cheolrik and blue-doah. Yeogis puffed their hair and put a round daiyo on it and worn gyoimhyeong hwangjangsam or bunryeong hwangjangsam. Donggis (young gisaeng) wore their hair in two braids, and put on red po, similar to hwangjangsam with dai.
Based on the analysis, it is presumed that the reason that the officials’ costumes were different than the rules was the regional bureaucrats had more freedom than their counterparts in the central government. Moreover, the higher one’s rank in hierarchy, the stricter their manner in wearing costumes was, while the lower one’s rank in hierarchy, the more vague his job description, title and costumes to be put on was.
Most of the characters in <Higyong-ru Banghwoe-do> was lower ranking officials in the regional government and special classes, who corresponded to jungin class. This study experienced a bigger challenge in investigating the lower rank officials’ costumes than the royal costumes due to significant lack of sources. Despite the examination of the literature, including collection of works by authors that recorded the folk customs and daily life in the Joseon Dynasty, this study had a limitation to conjecture the differences between the description portrayed in <Higyong-ru Banghwoe-do> and the descriptions recorded in the historical literature. Nevertheless, it is significant in that it attempted a costume examination by using a gyehwoe-do, type of record picture, and expanded the subject of research from the royal court and high ranking aristocrats to include jungin class. Further study is required on jungins and regional officials’ costumes based on record pictures.
