Social Representation of Africa : 아프리카의 사회적 재현[:]한국인과 아프리카인 사이의 차이 :The Difference between Koreans and Africans

국문 초록 (Abstract)

사회적 재현 이론이란 어떤 단체 또는 사회 구성원의 공통적인 가치, 이념, 실천에 관한 체계를 말한다. 이 이론에 근거하여, 이 연구는 아프리카에 대한 한국인과 아프리카인의 사회적 재현을 조사한다. 이를 달성하기 위해서 한국인 응답자, 아프리카인 응답자 총 34명을 대상으로 포커스 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 각 그룹에게 아프리카에 대한 다큐멘터리를 보여주었고, 다큐멘터리전를 보기 전, 보고 난 후에 각각 토론을 진행하였다. 연구 결과에 의하면 다큐멘터리를 시청하기 전 한국인은 아프리카에 대해 긍정적인 이미지보다 부정적인 이미지를 더 많이 가지고 있었고, 두 그룹에서 공통점이 거의 발견되지 않았다. 반면, 다큐멘터리 시청 이후에 아프리카의 대한 한국인의 재현은 긍정적으로 크게 변화하였다. 이는 미디어 컨텐츠가 사회에서의 사회적 재현을 재구성할 수 있는 힘이 있음을 선사한다. 이 연구는 한국인 대표단이 노출되는 미디어 콘텐츠의 장르에 따라 아프리카에 대한 인식을 갖는다고 결론짓는다. 끝으로, 포괄적이고 진정한 사회적 재현에 도달하기 위해서 이 연구는 아프리카인들이 스스로 자신을 재현할 것을 제안한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Theory of Social Representations connotes a system of values, ideas, and practices common to the members of a group (s) and community (ies). Through the lens of this theory, this research examined the Social Representations of Koreans and Africans concerning Africa. To access the Social Representations of Africa, two separate focused group discussion, one group comprising of Korean respondents only and the other group comprising African respondents only, with a total of 34 participants. Each group was exposed to a documentary, and discussions were held before and after the documentary. The results showed that before the documentary, both groups got representations with few similarities, where Koreans have more negative than positive images about Africa. After the documentary, it happens that Koreans’ representation has significantly changed positively. This illustrates the power of media contents in constructing communities' Social Representations. The research concludes that the representation Koreans have about Africa is contingent upon the genre of media contents they are exposed to. To reach the true and comprehensive representation, the research suggests that Africans should start representing themselves.
