The purpose of this study is to develop an elementary dance education program using Hwagwanmu (flower crown dance), which is classified as folk dance in our traditional dance and 4th intangible cultural asset of Hwanghae-do, and to provide useful data for the instruction of Korean folk dance in folk expression activities during elementary dance curriculum. In addition, by providing materials for a new program of folk dance this study tried a humanistic approach that expands the range of learning and extends to the implied meaning, background knowledge, and various learning derived from it, rather than aiming at acquiring simple skills.
In order to develop the elementary dance education program for Hwanghae-do Hwagwanmu (flower crown dance), the educational values were considered and related data such as videos and documents were collected and analyzed and dancing steps, movement of formation, and composition of beat that are suitable for children’s developmental stages and cognitive abilities were selected through a meeting of six expert advisors. The six expert advisors have more than 20 years of experience in dance education and majored in Korean dance including child development specialists, professors of dance major at University of Education, and dance instructors. They had three meetings during the development period.
At the first meeting, the appropriateness of the program development was judged based on the analyzed data of Hwanghae-do Hwagwanmu (flower crown dance). In the second meeting, the scope of appropriate physical activities for the developmental process of children was defined and the degree of difficulty about music and dancing steps were adjusted. The researcher presented the first program based on the standard selected in this process and the first program presented became the final program after discussing the content validity of the six consultants.
The elementary dance education program, which was developed as a folk expression program on the elementary school using Hwanghae-do Hwagwanmu (flower crown dance), was selected for elementary school senior students considering the operation of the semester and the ability of children to learn and focused on presenting efficient and systematic basic data necessary for the folk expression activities of the elementary school curriculum. The educational value of Hwanghae-do Hwagwanmu (flower crown dance) is defined as follows.
First, through the movement activity of the body using Hwanghae-do Hwagwanmu (flower crown dance), it can be expected to improve the psychomotor ability by inducing healthy body development through the dance steps learning that is integrated with the breathing.
Second, it expanded the application range of folk dance education to the implied meaning, background knowledge, and various learning derived from it, rather than aiming at acquiring simple skills by the humanistic approach of the elementary dance education program using Hwanghae-do Hwagwanmu (flower crown dance). The expectation of educational effects such as the instructive thought and personality education of our ancestors, historical awareness, and various knowledge acquisition of socio-cultural arts enables a wide learning of traditional arts with the children’s understanding of traditional dance and therefore enhances cognitive ability by extension of creative thinking.
Third, it is expected that Hwanghae-do Hwagwanmu (flower crown dance) will be able to naturally link the unification education as well as the comparison of the traditional arts between South and North Korea due to the nature of the area of origin. Through the learning of the historical background that changes the regional tradition structure before and after the Korean War, the children will be aware of the pain of division due to war and the pain of the separated family and will realize the necessity of unification. In addition, the improvement of the affective domain is expected through the opportunity of establishing national identity through the community learning process that shares feeling and harmonizes with multicultural families and North Korean defector families who are newly settled at the time of childhood socialization learning.
Like mentioned above, the education of the use of Korean folk dance including the Hwanghae-do Hwagwanmu (flower crown dance) is a good educational material to expect the harmonious growth of knowledge, virtue and body to children.
Finally, this study was to present a program for teaching children, but it is necessary to continuously research on the spread of on-the-job training and effective application of learning by using and applying it at school. The future active development of diverse programs based on connection between arts organizations and schools or nationally recognized and socially contributed traditional arts will also be the task of educators.
