The purpose of the study was to examine the current state of the Mongolian energy sector and its pressing challenges in order to recommend the strategies to increase the renewable energy share in total production. Moreover, survey was conducted from randomly selected 341 respondents to investigate their views on renewable energy utilization. The survey findings revealed that citizens are not satisfied with the government action towards expanding the renewable energy utilization. Moreover, they think government should take crucial steps to promote the renewable energy technology, most importantly, citizens expressed their readiness to little more to consume cleaner energy. Overall, Mongolia has tremendous amount of coal and renewable energy resources. Coal is the dominant energy resource. For this reason, air pollution is the pressing challenge of urban areas in Mongolia. Therefore, one of the solutions to this problem can be increasing the share of renewable energy in total energy production in order to eliminate the environmental externalities and supply more reliable energy. On the other hand, although Mongolia has large amount of renewable energy resources, they are not fully utilized due to technological, financial, and other constraints. Hence, Mongolia faces many challenges to implement the National renewable energy program and achieve the goal. The main purpose of the study is to recommend a policy to expand the utilization based on the analysis of citizens’ view on renewable energy utilization and overcome the barriers.
