Purpose: This study was designed to analyze color characteristics of 85 caps and evaluate color perception by using FM 100 hue test under CIE illuminant D65, TL84, and A. Methods: 85 caps were measured to analyze color characteristics (x, y, L*, a*, and b*) with UV-2450 UV-VIS spectrophotometer (Shimadzu, Japan) according to types of light source. For clinical trial, 42 subjects aged 25.24±3.15 years with corrected visual acuity 0.8 or above and no color blindness participated in this study. Light booth was used to create standard luminous environment, and FM 100 hue test was conducted to evaluate changes of color perception under D65, TL84, and A. Results were objectively calculated by ES and TES, and the higher ES and TES indicated decline in color perception.
Results: In xy coordinates, the distance between caps constituting group Ⅲ was not uniform. Metamerism index representing the color difference of the adjacent caps in the other two light source was the smallest between TL84 and A. Color perception according to types of light source were significantly different among D65, TL84, and A. The average of TES was higher in order of A, TL84, and D65, so the most dramatic decline in color perception was occurred in A (p<0.001). When comparing with color perception according to color group in each light source, significant decline in color perception occurred in group Ⅲ under D65, in group Ⅱ under TL84, both group Ⅱ and group Ⅲ under A (p<0.001). ES of A was significantly higher than those of D65 and TL84 in group Ⅰ, Ⅲ, and Ⅳ. ES of both A and TL84 were significantly higher than that of D65 (p<0.001). Conclusions: This study suggested that color appearance of caps and color perception in FM 100 hue test changed according to types of light source. Opticians need to help customers choose the color of their product correctly when they select and judge the colors of the various products under the illumination which does not show the color perception error.
