The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationships among social ability, self-esteem, language ability and resilience in young children and to investigate the predict variables for effecting on young children’s social ability. The research questions of this study are as followings:
First, what are the relationships between social ability and self-esteem in young children?
Second, what are the relationships between social ability and language ability in young children?
Third, what are the relationships between social ability and resilience in young children?
Forth, what is the relative influence of self-esteem, language ability and resilience on social ability in young children?
To draw the conclusion on these research questions, 176 young children(aged 5) who were attending 2 kindergartens located in K province were selected as the subjects. On these subjects, the 4 research instruments, ‘Social Situation Measurement', 'Young Children's Self-Esteem Scale', 'Receptive & Expressive Vocabulary Test' and 'Healthy Kids Resilience Module' were used to collect the data. The collected data were analyzed by conducting Pearson's product moment correlation and stepwise multi-regression through SPSS 21.0 program. The results of this study are as follows.
First, as a result of investigating the relationship between young children's social ability and self-esteem, there was a significant positive correlation in these two variables. As a result of looking into the relationship between the sub-category of social ability and self-esteem, basic social skill, emotion controlling skill and unaggressive coping skill which are the sub-category of social ability revealed a significantly positive correlation with self-esteem. On the other hand, there were no significantly correlation between the sub-category of social ability's institution adaptive skill, peer relationship-building skill and stress handling skill, and self-esteem.
Second, as a result of investigating the relationship between young children's social ability and language ability, there was a significant positive correlation in these two variables. As a result of looking into the relationship between the sub-category of social ability and language ability, basic social skill and emotion controling skill which are the sub-category of social ability revealed a significantly positive correlation with language ability. On the other hand, there were no significantly correlation between the sub-category of social ability's institution adaptive skill, peer relationship-building skill, unaggressive coping skill and stress handling skill, and language ability.
Third, as a result of investigating the relationship between young children's social ability and resilience, there was a significant positive correlation in these two variables. As a result of looking into the relationship between the sub-category of social ability and resilience, basic social skill and unaggressive coping skill which are the sub-category of social ability revealed a significantly positive correlation to resilience. On the other hand, institution adaptive skill, peer relationship-building skill, emotion controling skill and stress handling skill as the sub-category of social ability had not a positive correlation to resilience.
Forth, as a result of analyzing the relative influence of self-esteem, language ability and resilience on social ability, it was revealed that self-esteem was found as the strongest predict variable for effecting on children’s social ability. Secondly, language ability was found to be the positive predict variable. Finally, resilience was found to be the additional positive predict variable. As a result of analyzing the predict variables of the entire self-esteem, the entire language ability and the entire resilience for effecting on each sub-category of social ability, resilience was found to be the most positive predict variable for effecting on basic social skill on the sub-category of social ability. And then, self-esteem and language ability were sequentially revealed as the positive predict variables for effecting on basic social skill on the sub-category of social ability. Self-esteem was found to be the most positive predict variable for effecting on emotion controling skill and unaggressive coping skill on the sub-category of social ability. Also, as a result of looking into the predictive power of the sub-category of self-esteem, language ability and resilience on social ability, impulsivity-control skill on the sub-category of resilience was found to be the most positive predict variable that could predict young children's social ability. Secondly, expressive vocabulary ability which is the sub-category of language ability was revealed as the additional positive predict variable. Lastly, optimism which is the sub-category of resilience was revealed as the positive predict variable. In the predict variables of the sub-category of self-esteem, language ability and resilience effecting on basic social skill on social ability, impulsivity-control ability was found to be the most positive predict variable. And expressive vocabulary ability which is the sub-category of language ability, optimism which is the sub-category of resilience, physical competence and emotional competence which are the sub-category of self-esteem were the additional positive predictor in sequence. Also, the most positive predict variable that could account for institution adaptive skill on social ability was family acceptance as the sub-category of self-esteem. In the predictive power of the sub-category of self-esteem, language ability and resilience on peer relationship-building skill on social ability, cognitive competence which is the sub-category of self-esteem was found to be the most positive variable. And in the predictive power of the sub-category of self-esteem, language ability and resilience on emotion controling skill and unaggressive coping skill on social ability, emotional competence which is the sub-category of self-esteem was found to be the most positive variable.
In conclusion, it was found that young children's social ability had a correlation to self-esteem, language ability and resilience. And impulsivity-control ability and optimism as the sub-category of resilience and expressive vocabulary ability which is the sub-category of language ability were the positive predict variables effecting on social ability.
