Community Archives Principles on the Animal Rights Movement Archiving: Focused on Korea Animal Rights Advocates(KARA)

As the animal rights movement has recently gained recognition as a social movement representing one of society's minorities, it is creating a new social and political perspective in Korean society. This thesis examines the discourse on community archives that applies to animal rights archives. It first examines the significance of animal archives through studying the history and philosophy of animal rights from the standpoint of community archives, and then examines the significance and application of community archive principles in the case of the Korea Animal Rights Advocates (KARA).
This thesis examined the existing literature on community archives, particularly those of community archives archiving civil and human rights movements, in order to draw community archive principles that could be applied to animal rights archives. It delved into the significance and debates over animal rights archives as community archives and studied the philosophical and historical literature on animal rights to examine the significance of the animal rights movement as a social movement. The author directly participated and viewed the activities of KARA in order to examine how community archive principles applied in KARA's case.
The community archive principles that can be applied to animal rights archives are as follows: participation, continuous autonomy, diversity, and activism. Following these principles allows for animal rights archives to incorporate diverse narratives of all community members, including non-human animals, as community archives. The archives can also exercise continuous autonomy in the community's management of records, create a different social perspective through depicting animal rights as a narrative of resistance, and support the pending political issue of animal rights.
Examining the history and philosophy of animal rights demonstrates the following implications from the standpoint of animal rights archives as community archives: Animal rights archives are significant in that narratives of resistance and narratives that resist this narrative of resistance coexist in these archives, and thus allow to narrate more diverse perspectives in Korean society. In the case of the animal rights movement, their records on relevant events supporting this pending political issue allows for a deeper understanding. Thus, the methods of use, management, and analysis of community records demonstrate their usefulness to mainstream archives. Archives can operate as a space that can publicize the animal rights movement's "centering of the other," and furthermore invite reflection on the community's identity.
The most significant principle for activists in the case of the KARA archive is activism, and this can be seen as playing a partial role as a logic convincing activists to participate in archival management. Furthermore, the principle of activism provides a chance for reflection for those outside KARA to consider KARA's perspective. The continuous autonomy exercised in archival management by activists was not a visible result, but through reflection from meetings, research, and defining KARA's demands. Through participation and continuous autonomy exercised by activists, KARA was able to acquire diversity within its organization, and the practice of activism also allowed for Korean society to acquire diversity. That is, these four community archive principles created symbiotic effects like the movement of a cogwheel. However, considering that community archive principles are not easily applicable to archives when the animal rights movement lacks archives that operate as archive and memory communities in comparison to KARA, the author confirmed that the proposal and realization of community archives is possible such communities begin to identify as archive and memory communities at some level.
