The purpose of this study was to examine the process of understanding the causes of conflicts and finding a solution among preschoolers through role-playing geared toward resolving early childhood conflicts in an effort to have a more profound understanding of young children's thought and of changes in their emotion and thinking.
The subjects in this study were 26 preschoolers who were in a class of western age 5 named "Grass-blade" in Sunshine Kindergarten attached to an elementary school located in an urban community, South Gyeongsang Province. The preschoolers became aware of the necessity of conflict resolution and tried to find a solution from October 5 to November, 20. A primary role-playing plan was mapped out to resolve their conflicts from November 21 to December 23. A primary role- playing was fulfilled according to the plan from January 8 to February 2. A secondary planning and acting out were implemented based on the evaluation results of the primary role-playing, and then the primary and secondary role-playing was evaluated. As for data analysis, all the activities were recorded, and the recording materials were transcribed. Besides, this researcher's journal and interview data with the preschoolers were all gathered. The collected data were categorized and analyzed.
The findings of the study were as follows:
As for the results of the primary role-playing, the majority of the young children actively engaged in the role-playing with interest, but new conflicts took place in that course, which eventually resulted in detracting from their flow into the role-playing. In the beginning, they attributed the cause of the conflicts to the child who did wrong, but they learned to put themselves in another's position. They realized that there was something behind the action that caused the conflicts, and they gradually got to understand the perspectives or ideas of others. Concerning conflict-resolution strategy, they suggest a concession strategy and an avoidant strategy at first, which were to make a concession and leave the space, but they gradually came up with eclectic and compromise strategies as the activities went on. In addition, they started to get interested in how to converse to get rid of the negative emotion caused by the conflicts before using any solution strategy.
In the secondary plan, it's planned to let the young children choose what the role-play was about, and then to have them engage in an impromptu role-playing. As a result, they were able to get a big picture of the conflicting situations while they did the role-playing according to their own idea, And they were able to grasp the causes of the conflicts, and then the conflicts were naturally eliminated. Some of the young children who were hostile to each other resolved their mutual misunderstanding and understood each other while they listened to each other and gave their opinions in the role-play. Finally, they acquired how to converse to get rid of conflicts. They learned that the ways of resolving conflicts were by being specific when giving their own opinions, by speaking in a considerate manner even when rejecting someone's demand and by apologizing when doing anything wrong.
The findings of the study suggest that role-playing exerts a positive influence on teaching young children to look at the causes of conflicts from various angles instead of merely sticking to their own position, to understand others and to make use of good conflict-resolution strategies.
