Purpose of this research is to find out rules set by mothers to their children and the effects that children’s compliance and temperament have on problem behaviors of children. For the purpose, the following research topics have been setup:

    1. What are the states of rules set by mothers to their children, rule compliance, temperament, and problem behaviors of children?

    2. What are the correlations among the rules set by mothers to their children, children’s compliance, temperament, and problem behaviors?

    3. What are relative effects that the rules set by mothers to their children, children’s compliance, and temperament have on problem behaviors of children?
3-1. What are the effects that the rules set by mothers to their children, children’s compliance, and temperament have on internalizing problem behaviors?
3-2. What are the effects that the rules set by mothers to their children, children’s compliance, and temperament have on externalizing problem behaviors?
3-3. What are the effects that the rules set by mothers to their children, children’s compliance, and temperament have on overall problem behaviors?

Target for this research is the mothers of 264 preschool children between the age of 3~4 years old who are attending Childcare Centers located in Gyeonggi-do. Research tool that we have used to measure rules set by these mothers to their children was a tool developed by Smetana et. al. (2000) based on the research implemented by Gralinski and Kopp (1933), which was modified by Seong-sook Bu (2010). And research tool we have used to measure rule compliance of children consists of 30 behavior rules that are set by mothers, which can tell the state of their compliance. As for measurement of children’s temperament, we have used the Temperament Rating Scale that was devised by Hee-young Cheon (1993) for classification of Korean children’s temperament. Data collection was carried out through a questionnaire, and for analysis of data such methods as descriptive statistical analysis, Cronbach's α reliability analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Scheffeʹs post test, Pearson’s correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis were employed.

Results of this research can be summarized as follows:
First, most of the rules set by mothers to their children turned out to be in the areas of safety, health, and interpersonal relations, whereas those in personal area turned out to be the least. A significant difference appeared based on children’s age, suggesting that mothers set more rules to 4 year-old children than to 3 year-old children. In rule compliance of children, compliance to rules on children’s safety and protection of possessions turned out to be highest whereas compliance to rules on food/meal time routine turned out to be lowest. Rule compliance of 4 year-old children turned out to be higher than that of 3 year-old children. In children’s temperament, responsiveness turned out to be highest whereas emotionality turned out to be lowest. There was no significant difference in demographic characteristics. In problem behaviors of children, externalizing problem behaviors turned out to be higher than those of internalizing problem behaviors. Problem behaviors of 4 year-old children turned out to be higher than those of 3 year-old children. Problem behaviors of children whose parents are younger than 30 years old turned out to be higher than those of children whose parents are in other age groups.

This kind of results --which reveals that mothers set more rules to 4 year-old children than to 3 year-old children, rule compliance of 4 year-old children is higher than that of 3 year-old children, and problem behaviors of the former turned out to be lower than those of the latter— seems to indicate that the higher is the age of children, mothers try to control children’s behavior more, and that the higher is their age, children understand demand and instructions of adults better.

Second, when correlations among the rules set by mothers to their children, rule compliance, temperament, and problem behaviors of children were examined, in internalizing problem behaviors, temperamental emotionality(-), physiological regularity(-), adaptability(-), responsiveness(-), and safety of children(-), obedience/order(-), food/meal-time routine(-), and the overall rule compliance were in negative correlations. Of those, emotionality turned out to have the highest negative correlation, to be followed by physiological regularity, adaptiveness, responsiveness, and food/meal-time routine, obedience/order, safety of children, interpersonal relations, and family trifles among rule compliance in descending order. In externalizing problem behaviors, the activity(+) among children’s temperament was in a positive correlation whereas emotionality(-), responsiveness(-), and family trifles(-), safety of children(-), interpersonal relations(-) among the rules set by mothers to their children, and safety of children(-), protection of possessions(-), interpersonal relations(-), obedeience/order(-), food/meal–time routine(-), family trifles(-), and self-protection among rule compliance were in negative correlations. Of rule compliance, interpersonal relations turned out to have the highest negative correlation, to be followed by obedience/order, safety of children, food/meal-time routine, family trifles, protection of possessions, self-protection, and overall rule compliance in descending order, as well as by activity, emotionality, and responsiveness among children’s temperament, and by family trifles, safety of children, and interpersonal relations among the rules set by mothers to their children. In overall problem behaviors of children, activity(+) among children’s temperament was in positive correlation whereas emotionality(-), responsiveness(-), physiological regularity(-), and obedience/order(-), food/meal-time routine(-), family trifles(-), self-protection among rule compliance, and safety of children(-) and family trifles(-) among the rules set by mothers to their children were in negative correlations. Of those, the overall rule compliance was in highest negative correlation with problem behaviors, to be followed by obedience/order, food/meal-time routine, family trifles, and self-protection in descending order, and by emotionality, activity, responsiveness, and physiological regularity among children’s temperament and by safety of children and family trifles among the rules set by mothers to their children in descending order.
This kind of results —which reveals that children’s temperament is an important variable that has direct effect on problem behaviors-- seems to indicate that, in order to reduce problem behaviors of children, it is necessary to understand temperamental characteristics of children. Also, as an indication that rule compliance and the rules set by mothers to their children can ameliorate problem behaviors, control and restriction of children’s behaviors by mothers can be of help in reducing problem behaviors. Therefore, in order to guide children’s behaviors, mothers should set the rules related to safety of children and family trifles and provide guidance for children’s behaviors and daily habit from home.

Third, when the influence that the rules set by mothers to their children, rule compliance, and temperament have on problem behaviors of children was examined, protection of possessions and personal factors among the rules set by mothers to their children and emotionality among children’s temperament turned out to have significant effects on internalizing problem behaviors of children. Of those, the most influential was emotionality, to be followed by personal factors and protection of possessions in descending order. Also, obedience/order among rule compliance and activity and emotionality among children’s temperament turned out to have significant effects on externalizing problem behaviors. Of those, the most influential was activity, to be followed by emotionality and obedience/order in descending order. As for variables that affect overall problem behaviors of children, personal factors among the rules set by mothers to their children, obedience/order among rule compliance, and activity and emotionality among children’s temperament turned out to have significant effects. Of those, the most influential was emotionality among children’s temperament, to be followed by obedience/order, personal factors, and activity among children’s temperament in descending order.
This kind of results suggests that children with high activity and temperament of negative emotion are more likely to show problem behaviors in the sense that, when mothers set rules on personal choice problems of children and try to control, such effort can cause problem behaviors of their children. In other words, as children’s temperament is the variable that has the most influence on problem behaviors, personal choice problems should be left alone so that each individual decides on his or her own rather than setting rules to control or restrict. It shows that it is more desirable to alllow each individual to manage their personal problems by themselves.

In conclusion, results of this research suggest that mothers can ameliorate problem behaviors of their children by setting rules for everyday life, guiding them to internalize the rules by themselves and comply with them, through a better understanding of inherent disposition and temperament of their children.
