The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of parent-child attachment on self-discrepancy & peer relations of school-aged children. Subjects of this study were consisted of 711 elementary school students in Chungbuk province. Using SPSS 18.0 program, data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, Cronbach's α, F-test with Tukey post-hoc test, and Pearson's correlation. The test of model was done with analysis of correlation matrix in AMOS 18.0 program using a path analysis.
The result of this were as follows:
First, the attachment with father was appeared to be higher among fathers who had management/professional jobs and the attachment with mother was appeared to be lower among mothers who had her husbands jobs in fisheries/production/the simple laborer /the unemployed.
Second, the self-discrepancy of children was likely to be higher in girl students than boy students and in the 5th grade than the 6th grade. It was also shown to be higher when the educational and occupational level of fathers and mothers were high.
Third, there were difference in the peer relations according to the gender and grade of children. The initiative and cooperation/sympathy in peer relations were appeared to be higher in girl students than boys and in the 6th grade than the 5th grade.
Fourth, the attachment with fathers and mothers had direct effects on self-discrepancy of children regardless of children’s gender.
Fifth, the attachment with mothers had direct effects on children’s initiative and cooperation/sympathy in peer relations regardless of children’s gender.
Sixth, the self-discrepancy of children had direct effects on the initiative and cooperation/sympathy in peer relations and the path were not different according to children’s gender.
Seventh, the self-discrepancy of children had mediated between the attachment with parents and initiative and cooperation/sympathy in peer relations of children.
In conclusion, this research has the meaning that the intervention plan has been explored to increase positive peer relations of children by examining the influence on the self-discrepancy and the peer relations of school-aged children according to the gender. Also, the meaning may be found in the point that the self-discrepancy is lowered and the useful data has been presented in the program development and the counselling session to enhance the quality of parenting or peer relations.
