The purpose of this research is to develop a heritige related museum-based educational program for a better understanding of history, through the use of storytelling. Heritage related museums are limited in their subjects of exhibition(heritage) and as such, they provide a deeper level of knowledge and information on the topics of their exhibitions(heritage).
To develop a detailed program, the way stories in exhibits were comprised, were divided into 3 categories. They were: 'A story comprising one exhibit (A)', 'A story comprising several exhibits (B), and 'A story of a mixture of (A) and (B). Different configuration methods can be applied based on the types of story components. The story configuration methods can be divided as such: 'selection of message', 'conflict', 'appearing characters', 'plot'. In order to learn from storytelling, firstly, the type of how the story of the exhibit is comprised must be determined, and then taking into account the exhibit's characteristics, the 4 methods of configuration mentioned above must be selected appropriately.
With regard to the subject of this program, the Suwon hwasung Museum, it was determined that the way the story was comprised was in the category of 'A story comprising of several exhibits'. Also, the configuration method used was 'historical figures', taking into account the characteristics of the exhibits there.
The education program was divided into 8 parts and for the 1st and 2nd parts, prior to the actual field trip, preparation learning was done. Learning through storytelling was introduced and a variety of storytelling methods were suggested, and mind mapping activities were undertaken to activate any relevant previous knowledge. Also, new historical information was provided to the learners, and a plan of the field trip was formulated through visiting the website of the museum. Subsequently, with the 3rd to 5th parts being the main components of the learning program, storytelling was used to learn the history and to learn from the museum. The learners learnt the stories contained in the exhibits through their activity sheets and the program was designed so that the learners would be reminded of what they had previously learnt as they looked at the actual exhibits. The final 6th to 8th parts of the program were designated for post-learning and they involved the learners creating their own story based on what they had learned in the 3rd to 5th parts of the program, and then sharing their stories with the other learners. For this, so that learners could create their own story, a variety of post-learning activities such as creating mind maps and storyboards were done.
The program was done with 6th grade students at D Elementary School located in Gyeonggi Province. The program was reviewed by looking at mind maps that had been done before and after the program, storyboards, the results of the storytelling, and questionnaires done before and after the program. Firstly, the extent of expansion of information through which a story could be carried was analyzed by looking at the mind maps done before and after the program. With the storyboards and the results of the storytelling created by this information, how well the elements of the 'story' had been incorporated was analyzed. Also, the effects of the learning from an affective perspective was looked at through the questionnaires that were done before and after the program.
Through the execution of the program and according to the results of the analysis, we were able to induce an interest in learning as well as draw attention from the learners, and have them immersed and concentrating, through the use of various historical narratives and through storytelling. Also, we found there to be positive effects in terms of a harmonious development, in the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains of learning as well as the learner’s imagination of history, through the telling of each learner's own story in their own various methods.
