The purpose of this study is to suggest the practical techniques of effective speech training through understanding the concept of speech skill and searching for the various ways of training to use the skill freely.
This research was carried out by conducting the study of literature and the application of real case at the same time.
The contents of the this research are as follows:
Chapter Ⅰpresents the purpose and the method of the study.
Chapter II presents the concept of speech skill as a basic stage of communication and the ways of commanding speech technique according to the media.
Chapter Ⅲ presents the ways of training acting speech skill.
In this chapter I tried to understand breathing, utterance and articulation as the basic stage of speech training and then tried to figure out the ways of their training. I looked into how to find the sound by using one’s own imagination in a real training. I also examined the characteristics of each medium and how to speak in a different medium.
The speech skill of the Korean language depends on the correct understanding of the principles of combining consonants and vowels of Korean alphabet and the skills of articulating the correct pronunciation by relating the organs of articulation and breath. Acting speech skill means ‘the skills of commanding not an everyday speech but a language of the character created by the dramatist, making it live in a situation of now, here on stage(or a certain medium)’.
I searched the characteristics of acting speech skill according to the media, by dividing into drama and voice acting, radio, television broadcasting and voice acting, film, foreign movie dubbing and voice acting, animation and voice acting.
As the basic ways of training for acting speech skill, I presented the drill of breathing, utterance, articulation, sound finding, and the imagination drill to find the sound.
To acquire the effective acting speech skill, I studied the practice of speaking drill in various media and presented the results.
The conclusion drawn by this research is that the breath when acting must be different according to the kind of media.
In a drama performed in a large scale theater or a little theater, musical, TV drama, movie, CF, CM, radio drama, a foreign film dubbing, animation dubbing, the types of breath and articulation are needed to be different.
The period emphasizing the abdominal breathing has gone. The abdominal breathing is important, but trying to treat all the breath by abdomen is old-fashioned. When acting, all types of breathing we use in daily lives are necessary. To express their feelings, actors should use all types of breathing such as clavicle breathing, apex breathing, chest breathing, abdominal breathing, chest and abdominal breathing.
As the vocal training―breathing, utterance, articulation ―is important to the actors, they must practice breathing, uttering, and articulating constantly and continuously until they reach their goal and even ever after.
Furthermore, schools and training institutes must secure the constant curriculum and carry out the vocal training from the lower and primary stage to the graduation and advanced stage.
We cannot master the various skills searched in this study in a short time. Thus the education of speech should be correctly provided in a primary stage and constantly proceeding as well.
Expecting the succeeding research, I suggest the following:
First, speech education must be systematically conducted from the childhood and the basic drill for utterance, articulation and breathing must go side by side.
Second, the basic curricula in related college courses must be developed for the professional actors speech education.
Third, to promote the quality of speech education, it is necessary to consider giving ‘the qualification of speech education leaders’ to the experts who complete the necessary credits.
